Mixed martial arts career

Beginnings

Cain Velasquez began wrestling in Arizona High School and continued the sport through university. He successfully participated in college championships. Then he started MMA. He made his professional debut on October 7, 2006, when he defeated Jesse Fujarczyk with a technical knockout (TKO) in the first round at a Strikeforce event . He then fought at Bodog Fight and defeated Jeremiah Constant there in the same way.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (2008-2019)

In 2008 he moved to the UFC , where he first defeated Brad Morris and then Jake O'Brien by TKO in the first round. In February 2009 Velasquez, who was already feared for his "ground and pound", had to go into the second round against Denis Stojnic for the first time, but won this fight by TKO. In June he competed at UFC 99 in Cologne over three rounds against Cheick Congo and took his first points win. Again by TKO in the second round, he then won against Ben Rothwell in October . At UFC 110 in February 2010, Velasquez beat Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira after 2:20 minutes. Then a title fight against heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar was scheduled.

Velasquez defeated Lesnar by TKO in the first round and became the new UFC Heavyweight Champion at UFC 121 . For this fight Velasquez also received the award for the "Knock-Out of the Night". However, he lost the heavyweight title in his next fight on November 12, 2011 against Junior dos Santos by knockout in the first round. This fight was part of the first UFC event on the FOX Network and accordingly has received a lot of public attention. His next opponent was Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, whom he defeated on May 26, 2012 by TKO in the first round after 3:36 minutes. He then received a rematch for the title against Junior dos Santos, which was scheduled for December 29, 2012. This rematch went over the full distance of five rounds, Velasquez won this second clash by a unanimous decision of the judges. After two successful title defenses, again dominant victories against Silva and dos Santos, Velasquez lost his UFC heavyweight title to Fabrício Werdum on June 13, 2015 with a guillotine choke . At UFC 200, Velasquez defeated Travis Browne by TKO in the final seconds of the first round. Due to various injuries, the former champion had to take a break of two years before celebrating his comeback against Francis Ngannou on February 17, 2019 . Velasquez was knocked out after only 26 seconds and injured his knee again.
