Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira (born June 20, 1976 ) is a former Brazilian MMA fighter, best known by his nickname Minotauro . Nogueira gained worldwide popularity through his success in the heavyweight division at Pride FC and is considered one of the best BJJ fighters in MMA history . His twin brother Antônio Rogério Nogueira is also a professional martial artist.

Career

Minotauro started his career with the legendary Brazilian Top Team and initially fought mainly in Japan . He quickly gained notoriety for his ground fighting and submission skills and won his first major title at the King of Kings tournament in 2001 . In November 2001 Nogueira won the Pride Heavyweight Championship against Heath Herring and defended it five times by December 2002, including against Dan Henderson and Semmy Schilt . His triumphant advance came to a standstill in May 2003 when he lost to Fedor Emelianenko on points and had to give up the title. After another winning streak and winning the interim title against Mirko Filipović , Minotauro and Fedor met again. However, the fight was canceled because of a cut that Emelianenko had received by an accidental headbutt and declared a "no contest". Four months later, Nogueira lost again on points in the third meeting. In his remaining six Pride fights, he only had to admit defeat to Josh Barnett , but made no further attempt to win the heavyweight title.

After Pride FC ended in 2007, Minotauro moved to the Ultimate Fighting Championship . In February 2008 he won the interim heavyweight division against Tim Sylvia at UFC 81 , but lost it to Frank Mir that same year , where he was knocked out for the first time in this fight. In August 2009, he defeated UFC legend Randy Couture at UFC 102 in a spectacular fight on points that was named "Fight of the Year" by the UFC. It was becoming increasingly clear, however, that Nogueira could no longer keep up with the new generation of heavyweight fighters that was maturing in the UFC. At UFC 110 he was knocked out again against Cain Velasquez . Altogether, Minotauro could only win three of his last nine fights, where he was stopped early five times, which never happened to him at Pride FC. He completed his last fight at UFC 190 in Rio de Janeiro , where he lost to Stefan Struve on points.
