Fabrício Werdum (born July 30, 1977 in Porto Alegre ) is a Brazilian mixed martial arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter. He was heavyweight champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship , the most important MMA organization in the world, as well as twice BJJ world champion and winner of the ADCC tournament.

Career

Werdum completed his first MMA fight in Brazil in 2002, in 2005 he was hired by the well-known Japanese MMA organization Pride FC , where he was able to defeat Alistair Overeem , among others . In April 2007 Werdum made his debut in the UFC, but lost to Andrei Arlovski on points. After a knockout loss to Junior dos Santos at UFC 90 , Werdum signed on to Strikeforce , where he caused a sensation in June 2010 against Fedor Emelianenko . Werdum stopped Emelianenko, who hadn't lost in almost a decade, on the first lap with a triangle choke .

UFC

UFC Heavyweight Champion

In 2012 he returned to the UFC and was named the challenger to heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez after five straight wins . Werdum went into the fight in Mexico City as an outsider , but Velasquez was superior in all respects and won the fight in the third round by guillotine choke . However, Werdum already lost his first title defense when he was knocked out by Stipe Miocic at UFC 198 .

After losing the title defense

After losing his title defense, Werdum was supposed to play UFC 203 on September 10, 2016 against Ben Rothwell, who, however, canceled the fight on August 11, 2016 due to a knee injury and was replaced by Travis Browne. Werdum was able to win the fight unanimously on points.

In a rematch, Werdum was supposed to play against Cain Velasquez at UFC 207 on December 30, 2016, but the Nevada State Athletic Commission found him unable to fight and was not granted a combat license.

The fight against Ben Rothwell originally planned for UFC 203 was to be rescheduled on May 13, 2017 at UFC 211, but had to be canceled due to a suspension of Ben Rothwell by the USADA.

UFC 213 saw the third fight against Alistair Overeem on July 8, 2017, who Werdum lost to a controversial majority decision and a dominant third round on points.

On October 7, 2017 Werdum was supposed to play against Derrick Lewis at UFC 216, who had to retire from the fight on the day of the competition due to back problems. Instead, Werdum competed against Walt Harris, who jumped in at short notice, whom he defeated after a good minute in the first round via TKO (arm lever).

At the UFC Fight Night: Werdum vs. Tybura on November 19, 2017 in Sydney Werdum Marcin Tybura was able to dominate for the duration of the fight and win it unanimously on points. Werdum replaced Mark Hunt in this fight, who was not allowed to compete for health reasons.

After Werdum was able to temporarily dominate the fight against Alexander Volkov on March 17, 2018 at the UFC Fight Night 127 in London, he still lost it by knocking out in the fourth round.

On September 15, 2018, Werdum's fight against Oleksiy Oliynyk was scheduled as part of the UFC Fight Night 136 in Moscow, but since Werdum tested positive for trenbolone in a doping control on May 22, 2018, he was banned for two years.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Parallel to his MMA career, Werdum was also active as a competitor in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu . In 2003 and 2004 he won the heavyweight division of the World Jiu Jitsu Championship , in 2007 and 2009 at the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship .
