Júnior dos Santos Almeida , also known as Júnior Cigano (born January 30, 1984 in Caçador ), is a Brazilian mixed martial arts fighter. Dos Santos fights in the heavyweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship , where he is one of the top fighters and held the world title from November 2011 to December 2012.

Mixed martial arts career

Dos Santos started with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Yuri Carlton because he wanted to get fitter. After some time he was invited to an MMA training session where he met his boxing trainer Dorea and made his debut after about a year.

Early career

Dos Santos turned pro in 2006 at the age of 21. He fought at small events in Brazil like Demo Fight, Extreme Fighting Championship, Minotauro Fights, and Mo Team League. He won 5 of his first 7 fights, where he suffered his only loss to Joaquim Ferreira , whom he had defeated before.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (2008 – Today)

Dos Santos made his UFC debut at UFC 90 . Considered an outsider, dos Santos knocked out top challenger Fabrício Werdum in the first round with a strong uppercut

Dos Santos returned at UFC 95 and fought newcomer Stefan Struve , beating him in the first round by TKO.

Dos Santos continued his winning streak, defeating Mirko Filipović at UFC 103 . During the third round Dos Santos Filipović dominated the clinch with knees and punches. After Cro Cop had to take a knee and then an uppercut in the clinch within a short time, blood ran into his eye. This restricted his vision and made him give up the fight.

Dos Santos was supposed to fight Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 108 . Gonzaga called off the fight due to a staph infection. Instead, Dos Santos fought Gilbert Yvel and won the fight by TKO in the first round, bringing him the fourth win in a row in the UFC.

On March 21, 2010 Dos Santos defeated Gabriel Gonzaga on UFC Live: Vera vs. Jones by knockout in the first round.

Heavyweight title challenger

Dos Santos fought Roy Nelson on August 7, 2010 at UFC 117 . During the fight Dos Santos used a variety of punches and for the first time a successful takedown. Despite Dos Santos excellent stroke technique, Nelson was able to hold out and thus Dos Santos won on points (30-26, 30-27, 30-27).

On January 11, 2011, it was revealed that Dos Santos would become one of the trainers for The Ultimate Fighter Season 13 , facing Brock Lesnar . They were supposed to compete against each other on June 11, 2011 at UFC 131 , but Lesnar fell out due to illness and was replaced by Shane Carwin . Dos Santos dominated Carwin and defeated him on points, relying mainly on his boxing technique, but with a few kicks and two successful takedowns in the third round showed some variety.

UFC Heavyweight Champion

Dos Santos fought against Cain Velasquez at UFC on Fox 1 for the UFC Heavyweight Title on November 12, 2011. Dos Santos defeated Velasquez after 1 minute and 4 seconds in the first round by knockout and thus became UFC Heavyweight Champion. The fight won the Knockout of the Night award . After the fight, it was revealed that he had a tear in the meniscus that will be operated on in the near future.

Dos Santos was originally supposed to defend his UFC Heavyweight Title against Alistair Overeem at UFC 146 . The fight was scheduled for May 26, 2012. Since excessive testosterone levels were found in a drug test at Overeem in March 2012, this was replaced at short notice by Frank Mir . Again Dos Santos dominated with his strong boxing and knocked out Frank Mir in the second round. On December 29, 2012 there was a rematch against Cain Velasquez at UFC 155 . The US-American dominated Dos Santos almost at will for five rounds and thus regained the world championship belt in the heavyweight class.

After the heavyweight title

After a spectacular win against Mark Hunt , Dos Santos took on Cain Velasquez for the third time on October 19, 2013 . As in her second fight, Velasquez dominated the action thanks to his strong wrestling skills, a completely worn out Dos Santos went TKO in the fifth round. On December 13, 2014, he won a point in a tough fight against Stipe Miocic . On December 19, 2015 there was a long-awaited duel with Alistair Overeem, which Dos Santos lost by knockout. On April 10, 2016 Dos Santos defeated Ben Rothwell clearly on points, whereupon he was allowed to fight again for the heavyweight title. He lost to Stipe Miocic at UFC 211 on May 13, 2017, but already in the first round by knockout.

Dos Santos was scheduled to face Francis Ngannou at UFC 215 on September 9, 2017, but was banned from fighting by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) on August 18, 2018 due to a possible doping offense. On April 24, 2018, Dos Santos was officially acquitted by the USADA of suspected conscious use of performance-enhancing substances.

On July 14, 2018 Dos Santos returned to the UFC and defeated the Bulgarian Blagoy Ivanov in his comeback at UFC Fight Night 138.
