Alistair Cees Overeem (born May 17, 1980 in Hounslow , London , England ) is a Dutch MMA fighter and kickboxer . He is the former world champion in the heavyweight MMA League Strike Force and won the 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix. Of his 57 MMA fights, he was able to win 42, 38 of them by knockout or abandonment. In kickboxing he won ten of his 14 professional fights. Overeem is feared above all for his knee kicks from the clinch . He is the younger brother of Valentijn Overeem , who is also an MMA fighter.

Career

Mixed martial arts

Alistair Overeem made his MMA debut in 1999 and initially fought mainly in the Netherlands, later in Japan at Pride FC . Until 2006 he only competed in the weight class up to 93 kilograms, from 2007 he moved permanently to the heavyweight class. At Pride Overeem celebrated victories over fighters like Vitor Belfort and Sergei Kharitonov , but could not win a title. He succeeded in doing this in 2007 at the US MMA organizer Strikeforce by defeating Paul Buentello . However, because of his activities in Japan and his K-1 career, he did not defend the title until 2010 against Brett Rogers .

After the dissolution of Strikeforce, Overeem moved to the Ultimate Fighting Championship and was immediately considered one of the hottest title contenders. On December 31, 2011 he was able to win his first fight in the UFC against Brock Lesnar . His next planned UFC fight should be a world title fight against reigning UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos . He was replaced by Frank Mir due to excessive testosterone levels, which were found at Overeem in March 2012 on the occasion of a routine check . When Overeem returned after his suspension in 2013, he was unable to build on his formidable form. He suffered heavy knockout defeats against the underdogs Antônio Silva , Travis Browne and Ben Rothwell . However, he overcame this crisis and put down a series of four victorious fights in a row. The Dutchman showed one of his strongest performances on December 19, 2015 when he knocked out the former champion Junior dos Santos with a left hook. On September 16, Overeem fought at UFC 203 against Stipe Miocic for the first time for the UFC heavyweight title. Though considered a slight favorite, he lost the fight to a knockout in the first round. With a knockout win against Mark Hunt at UFC 209 and a (controversial) points win in his third duel with Fabrício Werdum at UFC 213 , Overeem got into conversation for another title fight. After that, however, the Dutchman suffered heavy knockout defeats against Francis Ngannou and Curtis Blaydes . With quick knockout victories over Sergei Pavlovich and Aleksei Oleinik , Overeem was able to rehabilitate a bit afterwards.

Kickboxing

Overeem, like many Dutch martial artists, originally came from Thai and kickboxing, but has focused most of his career on MMA. On December 31, 2008, Overeem competed in a long K-1 match at Dynamite. His opponent was Badr Hari , one of the strongest K-1 fighters and thus the clear favorite for this fight. However, Overeem could surprise heavily and struck Hari after just two minutes through KO . After that fight, Overeem began pursuing a K-1 career in addition to MMA.

At the K-1 World Grand Prix 2009 in Yokohama Overeem played a super fight against the reigning K-1 champion Remy Bonjasky , but was clearly defeated on points.

On September 26, 2009 Overeem was able to qualify for the K-1 World Grand Prix for the first time after defeating the old master Peter Aerts clearly on points.

At the World Grand Prix 2009 Overeem won the first fight against Ewerton Teixeira by a brutal knee knockout in the first round. In the second fight of the tournament Overeem met his rival Badr Hari again . Overeem lost the bout in the first round after being counted twice by the referee. Overeem later stated in an interview that the second rainfall was not a real rainfall, as it only lost its balance briefly.

On October 2, 2010 Overeem was able to qualify for the 2010 World Grand Prix by beating Ben Edwards. He knocked Edwards down 3 times in the first round.

At the World Grand Prix 2010 Overeem started as one of the big favorites for the title in the tournament. He won the first fight against Tyrone Spong on points. In the second fight he met Gökhan Saki , whom he defeated towards the end of the first round with a strong kick on his right arm, which had already been injured in advance. In the final of the tournament he met Peter Aerts for the second time , who surprisingly beat the title holder Semmy Schilt in the semifinals . However, Aerts was badly affected by the fight with Schilt and Overeem was able to knock Aerts out easily after just under a minute and thus win the tournament. This makes Overeem the first MMA fighter to win the K-1 World Grand Prix.
