Semmy Schilt

Sem "Semmy" Schilt ( [sɛmi sxɪlt] ) Nickname: Hightower , (* 27. October 1973 in Rotterdam ) is a former Dutch K-1 - kickboxer and mixed martial arts fighters. He is 2.12 m tall and weighs between 128 and 133 kg.

Career

Schilt was European champion in karate and competed in MMA fights at Pancrase and Pride , in which he was only moderately successful. From 2005 he appeared regularly in K-1 and only sporadically in MMA. His first big success was winning the World Grand Prix 2005. In the first round of the tournament he defeated Ray Sefo after a unanimous decision on points. In the semifinals he beat his compatriot, the two-time world champion Remy Bonjasky by knockout . Semmy Schilt met Glaube Feitosa in the final . The Brazilian was severely knocked out after just a few seconds after he was hit in the head by a knee-kick from Schilt.

While he remained undefeated for the whole year in 2005, he suffered two controversial defeats in 2006. At the beginning of the year at the World Grand Prix tournament in Auckland ( New Zealand ) he lost to Peter Aerts on points. The point decision at the World Grand Prix tournament in Seoul was also 1: 2 against him. His opponent was the local hero Choi Hong-man , the only K-1 fighter who is even bigger and heavier than Schilt. So far, there has never been a fight between two athletes of such physical proportions across all martial arts . Schilt weighed 133 kg at 2.12 m, Choi at 2.18 m 161 kg. Even the WBA heavyweight world championship between Nicolai Valuev (2.13 m at 146 kg) and Jameel McCline (1.98 m at 122 kg), which is a physical record in boxing , could not keep up. Valuev and McCline together put 268 kg and 4.11 m into the ring, Schilt and Choi 294 kg and 4.30 m.

He also won the 2006 World Grand Prix. He won the first fight against Jérôme Le Banner . In the semifinals he then defeated the four-time World GP winner Ernesto Hoost . He played the final against Peter Aerts, against whom he had already lost once this year, and won by points, as in the quarter and semi-finals.

K-1 introduced a new weight class and an official world champion belt in 2007. The first title fight in the super heavyweight contested Schilt and Ray Sefo. After Schilt was knocked down by Sefo at the end of the first lap, he knocked him out with a left straight after 20 seconds of the second lap. Sefo has never been knocked out by a blow in K-1. Since March 4, 2007, Schilt was the world champion in the "super heavyweight" class, which applies to fighters over 100 kg.

On June 23, 2007, Schilt defended his title for the first time at his home Grand Prix in Amsterdam against Mighty Mo , the “toughest puncher in K-1” by winning points. On March 4, 2007, Mo knocked out the 2.18 m tall and 165 kg heavy Choi Hong-man in Yokohama as the first ever.

On December 9, 2007, he became the first fighter ever to win the World Grand Prix for the third time in a row. In the first fight of the tournament he defeated Faith Feitosa unanimously on points. However, it was an uphill battle in which he was hit by a heavy high kick. In the second fight Schilt faced Jérôme Le Banner. However, he was forced to give up in the second round due to an injury. The subsequent final was a new edition of the previous year's final, as the opponent was again Peter Aerts. But Peter Aerts was also injured when he twisted his knee after being hit by a left leading hand.

On September 27, 2008 Schilt lost his elimination match for the World Grand Prix 2008 against Peter Aerts with 2-0 judges' votes.

He clearly won the World Grand Prix 2009. In the first fight he repeatedly defeated Jérôme Le Banner , who went down twice in the first round and thus lost. His second fight against Remy Bonjasky was not a new edition either. Remy Bonjasky succeeded in sending Schilt to the ground with an uppercut, but the knockdown had no effect. Schilt found his way back into the fight and knocked out Bonjasky in the first round. In the final he met Badr Hari , who had also won every fight of the tournament in the first round. Badr Hari was very aggressive and attacked Schilt without mercy. However, Schilt managed to counter and sent Hari to the ground with a strong punch in the face. Schilt then got two more knockdowns and he also won this fight in the first round. He also set a new record. He won the entire tournament in little more than five minutes.

On April 3, 2010, Schilt won the World Grand Prix 2010 in Yokohama on points against Errol Zimmerman .

On September 2, 2010, Schilt was able to qualify again for the World Grand Prix 2010 after defeating Hesdy Gerges on points.

At the World Grand Prix 2010 Semmy Schilt was able to prevail against the Japanese Kyotaro in the first round . In the semifinals, Schilt lost on points against his compatriot Peter Aerts . It was the first time that Schilt was eliminated from an ongoing tournament.

Worth mentioning

In addition to the K-1 World Grand Prix hat-trick already described, Schilt was also able to set up two remarkable series of victories in the K-1. This concerned the period from November 6, 2004 to December 31, 2005 and from September 30, 2006 to June 29, 2008, when he won 10 and then even 13 K-1 fights in a row; in the first series he decided 8 fights early, in the second he was able to win 6 fights by knockout.

In his K-1 career there has not been a fight that was not scored.

Trivia

In the action film Transporter 3 from 2008, Schilt has a smaller role as a henchman.
