action

Ex-soldier Jonas Johnson lands in Ukraine and informs a minister there that he has kidnapped his daughter and that he will only see her again if he signs a contract that allows ECOCORP to dispose of its toxic waste in the Ukraine collapse, which he had previously vehemently rejected.

That same night, a black Audi A8 drives into Frank Martin's house. Frank, who had given up his job as a driver and often goes fishing with his fatherly friend, Inspector Tarconi, recognizes the driver as his old friend Malcolm Manville. He gave his name as a replacement for himself on an assignment. Malcolm is badly injured and cannot express himself clearly. After the paramedics drive him away in the ambulance, Frank discovers a girl in the back of the vehicle. She asks him if she is in heaven. He says no and states that she would rather be in the shit pretty deep. She refuses to leave the vehicle because of a bracelet. Since Malcolm wears the same bracelet, Frank rushes after the ambulance, but cannot prevent an explosive device from detonating in Malcolm's bracelet. Frank is knocked unconscious after returning to the house. When he wakes up, there is now such a bracelet on his wrist as on his deceased friend Malcolm. After putting on his signature suit, Johnson arrives and tells him that he will now take over Malcolm's job. Frank agrees on the condition that he can drive his own car. The navigation device in his vehicle is manipulated in such a way that it will show him the sections of the route to be driven according to a code to be entered. Also, the girl who was Malcolm's passenger is sitting in his car. This is how Frank finds out his first destination: Budapest. On the way there, he crossed Germany , tried to get more information from the girl and stopped in a workshop with his old friend Otto. He asks his help to remove the bracelet. But Johnson's thugs are unexpectedly in the workshop and drive Frank to drive on, which ends in a fight that Frank wins. This makes it clear that Frank can be located permanently and you always know exactly where he is. Removing the bracelet would lead to detonation and the transmitter in the vehicle that Otto discovered and that controls the bracelet cannot be easily removed. So Frank continues his journey. Johnson contacts him and directs him to a market square in Budapest. Frank waits there for Johnson's call and has to find out that he is calling a public telephone. While Frank is talking to Johnson on this phone, his Audi is stolen. Since he is not allowed to move more than 25 meters from his car so that the bracelet does not explode, the vehicle is not allowed to escape him. He goes in chase on a BMX bike and recaptures his car. He informs Inspector Tarconi of his knowledge and makes a new deal with Johnson.

Frank now has to go to Bucharest. Ukrainian secret agents pursue him on the way. He succeeds in pushing the agents' vehicle into an abyss. The car crashes and explodes. His co-driver, Valentina, now reveals to him that she herself is the mission. She was kidnapped in Ibiza and driven by Malcom. After trying to call her father, the two were followed, which ultimately resulted in the accident at Frank's house. If she escaped, something would be done to her father. When Johnson locates Frank again, he explains to him that he should now go to Odessa. Frank does this and orders Tarconi there too. He should try to get in touch with Valentina's father, who is on his way to a conference in Odessa.

Even outside the city, Frank and Valentina are arrested by a truck and two range rovers on the dam wall of a lake. The mission is over, and Frank has to hand over frightened Valentina to Johnson and his helpers. Unfortunately, he can't help her at the moment and has to get himself and his car to safety first. He breaks through the railing of the reservoir and thus sinks the vehicle that is shot at by Johnson's helpers. Frank opens the valves of the tires in order to be supplied with breathing air as well as to fill the pockets of the previously supposed cargo (telephone books) with air in order to bring the vehicle back to the surface of the water. After Johnson and his men leave, a tractor pulls the vehicle out of the lake. Frank now meets with Tarconi and explains the exact reason for this action. Frank and Tarconi find out that Johnson is on the train, along with his men and Valentina. Frank takes his Audi, which is running again despite sinking in the water, to a bridge under which the train has to pass a little later. From there he drives to the roof of the train, kills Johnson's people and follows him himself to the second car. He cannot go any further because the bracelet is still active and he is too far away from the car. While he runs back to his car, Johnson uncouples the rest of the cars from the train. Frank now drives at high speed into the second, the last uncoupled wagon and has a fight with Johnson. Frank manages to put on Johnson the bracelet and put the Audi into reverse gear so that the car rolls off the train. Johnson dies from the bracelet explosion, which also severely damages the train's last car. After Frank woke up Valentina, she asks him if she is in heaven (reference to the first encounter), to which Frank replies that this looks more like hell.

The minister is informed that his daughter has been saved, tears up the contract that was imposed and Valentina stays with Frank.

criticism

Christoph Petersen from the Filmstarts editorial team rates Transporter 3 as average and the action scenes as a bit “overdone”. "The result is a fun firework of action that comes up with an extremely likeable protagonist duo, but largely dispenses with fresh ideas."

Moviemaze.de also judges similarly as Julian Reischl summarizes it, after all, “brilliant action with cars, weapons and explosions”, “fights and a perfectly trained Jason Statham” bring the right “ingredients” for the “cinema enjoyment” to be expected. He also finds it fitting that there have been "better and, above all, more logical films", but in the tradition of the Transporter series, "Part 3 definitely cuts a good figure."

“'Transporter 3' consistently expands the concept of its predecessor and adds a dash of ' Die Hard ' tension. The car stunts and mass brawls are perfectly choreographed, toughness and irony are in balance, Frank Martin often enough shows himself bare-chested, and François Berléand once again acts as the policeman Tarconi as a humorous sidekick. The film rushes by quickly in the truest sense of the word and contains all the ingredients that genre fans expect. [...] Conclusion: Continuation of the crash-intensive 'Transporter' series with more action, thrill and unexpected romantic nuances: Jason Statham doesn't brake for anyone. "

"Mediocre genre film with a one-dimensional main character and unimaginatively staged action sequences, which even a booming soundtrack doesn't make more thrilling."

Awards

In 2009 Transporter 3 was nominated for the audience award of the European Film Award.

Gross profit

With a budget of around 30 million euros (approx. 41.7 million dollars), the film grossed over 31 million dollars in the USA alone, while a total (worldwide) of around 108 million dollars was achieved.

Trivia

All externally distinguishable variants of the Audi A8 type D3 / 4E were used in the film. The car used by Frank's friend at the beginning of the film is an Audi A8, built in 2002-2004 with a split front grill. At Frank's Auto, different cars were used, which differ in details. Officially it is an Audi A8 W12. However, other vehicles were used as “stunt doubles”, as the Audi only shows the typical W12 exhaust system in very few scenes. The W12 symbol in the radiator grille cannot be seen in all scenes either and the rear lights sometimes belong to Facelift 1 (2004–2007) and sometimes to Facelift 2 (model year 2008–2009). In some scenes you can even see the exhaust pipes of a diesel exhaust pointing downwards. The typical silver mirror caps were adopted from the Audi S8. Facelift 2 can be seen almost continuously in the close-ups. Almost all connection errors in the film have to do with the Audi A8.
