The Careerist is a Cuban feature film from 1986.
action
The film shows the life paths of two sons from a rich Cuban family between 1929 and 1959. While Darío Argüelles follows his socialist ideals, fights in the Spanish Civil War in the international brigades and later heads the editorial office of a socialist newspaper, his brother changes from an initially convinced anarchist to the opportunist who betrays all of his ideals over time. He becomes a senator in the Batista government. In this position he is forced to turn against his own family, responsible for the death of his brother Darío and the suicide of his mother. After the victory of the revolution he was left with nothing.
Reviews
"A consistently nostalgic look back that reconstructs the conditions in feudal and decadent Havana before the revolution with sometimes excessive pathos and an enormous amount of detailed costumes and decorations."
“As always, Solás strives for a close connection between ideology and drama. He designs with the mentality of the Latin American and aimed at the mentality of his compatriots, i.e. with great, sometimes exorbitant feelings in the area of interpersonal relationships and at the same time with clear political emphasis. Artistic ability, a sense of style and a confident aesthetic judgment save him from mannerism and schematism. Last but not least, a look back at the recent past of the Caribbean island is also an opportunity to better understand the present and its problems. "
