biography

In 1996, Belfort made his mixed martial arts debut and won his first fight in just twelve seconds. His coach at the time was Carlson Gracie. In 2004 he won the UFC light heavyweight title before moving to middleweight in 2008.

After a positive doping test, Belfort was suspended for nine months in 2006.

Of his 25 wins (as of June 2016), Belfort was able to get 18 through (T-) KO, 15 of them in the first round.

On April 10, 2010, Belfort should have got another title fight against Anderson Silva in Abu Dhabi , but he was injured during training and was unable to fight for the rest of the year.

The fight finally took place on February 5, 2011, but ended with a spectacular knockout for Silva via front kick .

After two more fights, Belfort received a title fight against Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones and was almost able to force him to surrender with an arm lever in the first round, but was dominated by Jones for the rest of the fight and in the fourth round via Americana (flexor against the shoulder) defeated.

In 2013 he was able to record a spectacular series of 3 KO victories and should challenge the new middleweight title holder Chris Weidman . However, Belfort could not compete because he failed a doping test and was then banned . Only in 2015 did the title fight against Weidman, which Belfort lost to TKO in the first round.

Belfort is currently training at the Fortfit Gym in Rio de Janeiro.
