Richard Jay Franklin II , short Rich Franklin (born October 5, 1974 in Cincinnati ) is a former American mixed martial arts fighter .

Career

Before Franklin became a professional MMA fighter, he was a math teacher and practiced karate and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu . He made his MMA debut on March 24, 2000 at an event organized by the organizers Extreme Challenge . He won by technical knockout. As a result, he fought at events from World Extreme Fighting , International Fighting Championship , Rings , World Fighting Alliance and TKO Major League MMA , before his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut Evan Tanner by technical knockout on April 25, 2003 in Miami defeated. He also won his second UFC appearance at UFC 44 on September 26, 2003. In the following fight at the Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye Festival 2003 in Kobe , he suffered his first defeat against Lyoto Machida . After two fights in smaller leagues, the UFC 50 won a win against Jorge Rivera on October 22, 2004 . After a final foray into a small league, Franklin stayed with the UFC. In the final event of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter , he defeated Ken Shamrock on April 9, 2005 . At the UFC 53 event on June 4, 2005, Franklin defeated Evan Tanner again and became UFC Middleweight Champion . For the second season of The Ultimate Fighter , Franklin was hired as a coach.

At UFC 56 on November 19, 2005 he was able to defend the title against Nate Quarry and at UFC 58 on March 4, 2006 against David Loiseau , where he broke his hand. At his next event, UFC 64: Unstoppable on October 14, 2006 in Las Vegas , Rich Franklin was knocked out against Anderson Silva and lost his title. After two wins over Jason MacDonald and Yushin Okami, he competed again in the title fight against Silva and lost again. This was followed by victories over Travis Lutter and Matt Hamill, before he was at UFC 93: Franklin vs. Henderson , had to face Dan Henderson on January 17, 2007 in Dublin and was defeated. At the UFC 99: The Comeback event on June 13, 2009 in the Lanxess Arena in Cologne , he won against Wanderlei Silva . On September 19, 2009 he lost to Vitor Belfort in the first round. At UFC 115 on June 12, 2010, he defeated Chuck Liddell by knockout in the first round, but broke his arm in the fight. After recovering, he faced Forrest Griffin in February 2011 and was defeated on points. In 2012, Franklin retired after losing to Cung Le . As a result, his competition balance was 29 wins and seven defeats as well as one fight without evaluation.
