Matt Lindland
Matthew "Matt" James Lindland (born May 17, 1970 in Oregon City , Oregon ) is a retired American wrestler and mixed martial arts fighter .
Career
Wrestler
Matt Lindland started wrestling at Clackamas Community College. He also continued this sport very successfully at Nebraska State University , where he moved to after college. He worked in both styles, Greco-Roman style and free style. In 1992 he was the first American university champion in free style. In 1994 the Sunkist Kids started in Phönix , one of the most renowned US wrestling clubs. From 1995 he specialized more in the Greco-Roman style and became a member of the national team. Matt began his international wrestling career by winning the Pan American Championships in Mexico City in 1994, where he won the Greterweight, Greco-Roman style.
Matt was also very successful at three other Pan-American championships in the Greco-Roman style. In 1997 he was second winner in San Juan / Puerto Rico behind the exceptional Cuban wrestler Filiberto Ascuy Aguilera , in 1999 he won in Winnipeg before Ascuy and in 2000 he won this title in Cali / Colombia before Nestor Almanza from Cuba.
In 1997 Matt started in Wroclaw for the first time at a world championship. He finished there in 17th place in the welterweight division, which was disappointing for him. The decisive factor for this was a defeat in the first round against the Finnish veteran Marko Yli-Hannuksela . Things went much better for him at the 1998 World Cup when he finished 6th. In the following year 1999 there was another setback for him at the World Cup in Athens , because he only finished 24th. This time he failed in the first round against the Turkish world champion Nazmi Avluca .
At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney there was a Matt Lindland on the mat, who fought his way through to the final with four wins and only lost to the Russian Murat Kardanow with 0: 3 points there.
At the 2001 World Cup in Patras he had a similar success, because he was back in the final battle, but in which he lost to Muchran Vakhtangadze from Georgia with 1: 2 points.
After the 2001 World Championships, Lindland worked as a professional mixed martial arts fighter.
Mixed Martial Art
Lindland played his first MMA fights in 1997, including for the IFC . In December 2000, he entered the Ultimate Fighting Championship for the first time , where he played twelve fights until August 2005. After engagements with other organizers, he went to Strikeforce in December 2009 , where he lost twice and won once until December 2010. At this point, his MMA match record was 22 wins and eight losses.
