Baqtijar Baghascharuly Baissejitow ( Kazakh Бақтияр Бағашарұлы Байсейітов ; born September 29, 1971 ) is a former Kazakh wrestler . In 1998 he was world champion in Greco-Roman wrestling in the welterweight division .

Career

Baqtiyar Baissejitow started wrestling as a teenager in 1983. He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style and started for Däulet Alma-Ata (today Almaty ). He was trained by Tanat Saifindekow and Däulet Turlychanow . During his playing days, wrestling was also his profession. After finishing his career, he became a coach in Almaty.

His sporting successes on the international wrestling mat only began in adulthood. In 1993 he took part in the Asian Championships in Hiroshima and took 3rd place in the middleweight division. In 1994 he started at a world championship for the first time. In Tampere he was back in the middleweight division, but could not place himself there with the 15th place in the front field.

In 1995 the first great successes came. First he won the Middleweight Asian Championship in Manila before Raatbek Sanatbajew from Kyrgyzstan and Behrouz Jamshidi from Iran . Then he was able to convince at the World Championships in Prague , where he had trained for the first time in the welterweight division. Behind Yvon Riemer from France and in front of Filiberto Ascuy Aguilera from Cuba , he took 2nd place and became vice world champion .

After a 3rd place in the Asian championship in 1996 in Xiaoshan / People's Republic of China in the welterweight division, in the weight class in which he always started from this championship, he took part in the Olympic Games for the first time this year. He had drawn a tough lot and lost in Atlanta in his first fight against Filiberto Ascuy Aguilera . He then defeated Rodolfo Hernandez Vazquez from Mexico , but lost in his third fight against Józef Tracz from Poland , with which he only reached 11th place.

At the 1997 World Championships in Wrocław he finished 5th, but defeated three world class wrestlers with the reigning world champion Yvon Riemer , Murat Kardanow from Russia and Nazmi Avluca from Turkey. Due to an unexpected defeat against Tamas Berzizca from Hungary, however, his hopes for a medal burst. Finally he lost to Olympic champion Filiberto Ascuy Aguilera .

In 1998 Baqtijar Baissejitow achieved the greatest success of his career. He became world champion in Gävle . On the way to this title he defeated u. a. his permanent rivals Józef Tracz, Murat Kardanow and Filiberto Ascuy Aguilera , whom he outclassed with 9: 3 points. In the same year he also won the Asian Games in Bangkok ahead of Takamitsu Katayama from Japan and Kim Jung-sub from South Korea .

In 1999 he was unable to build on these successes. He finished only 5th at the Asian Championship in Tashkent and lost to Nazmi Avluca and Matt Lindland from the United States at the World Cup in Athens and ended up in 29th place. As a result, he was not qualified for the Olympic Games in Sydney . In 2000, Baqtiyar Baissejitow had to contest four difficult Olympic qualification tournaments before he had reached the number of points required to participate in Sydney. Shortly before the Olympic Games, he was once again Asian champion ahead of Takamitsu Katayama in Seoul . At the Olympic Games himself he then lost his first fight against Marko Yli-Hannuksela from Finland . Despite a victory in his next fight against former world champion Yvon Riemer , he had to retire according to the regulations at the time and came in 10th place.

In 2001 Baqtijar Baissejitow came to two victories at the World Cup in Patras , but lost in his third fight against the Greek local hero Sergios Solonikis and came in 7th place. At the end of his career as a wrestler, he started again after a four-year break in 2005 at the Asian Cup in Wuhan, where he finished 2nd behind Dawiar Kobonow from Kyrgyzstan .
