World Wrestling Championships 2001
The World Wrestling Championships 2001 took place separately at different locations according to style. The wrestlers were each divided into eight weight classes, while the women competed in six weight classes. Originally, the World Championships were to be held from September 26th to 29th, 2001 in Madison Square Garden in New York City . 693 athletes from 82 nations announced their participation. After the terrorist attacks of September 11th, the FILA canceled the event one week before it began for reasons of piety and security. In October 2001 new dates and venues were announced.

The Greco-Roman style competitions took place from December 6th to 9th, 2001 in Patras .
