Herman Kantojeu ( Russian Герман Степанович Контоев ; born November 27, 1971 in Khabarovsk , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian or Belarusian wrestler . He became the 2001 flyweight world champion in free style .

Career

Herman Kantojeu, a Siberian from Khabarovsk, started wrestling as a teenager in his hometown in 1985. Over the years he fought his way into the top tier of the national wrestling elite in the Soviet Union and later in Russia , focusing on free style. It was very light and always started in the flyweight, the weight class up to 52 kg or 54 kg and in the bantam weight up to 55 kg body weight. In 1993 he was used by the Russian Wrestling Federation at a World Cup in Chattanooga , where he finished second behind Zeke Jones from the United States.

In 1995 he decided to move to Belarus and start for this country because the competition there was not as great as in Russia. He became a member of the sports club RTsFVS Minsk . His trainer there was Valentin Murzinkow. He made his first start for Belarus at the 1995 World Cup in Atlanta . He came in 9th place there. Also in 1996 and 1997 he could not yet reach the medal ranks at the international championships. At the European Championships in Budapest in 1996 he finished 10th and at the 1997 European Championships in Warsaw he came in 7th place, at the 1997 World Championships in Krasnoyarsk he came 14th after two wins and two defeats.

In 1998 Herman Kantojeu won his first medal at an international championship at the European Championships in Bratislava . There he defeated Thomas Röthlisberger from Switzerland , Jaanek Lipps from Estonia and Murad Ramazanow from Russia and was defeated in the final by the Ukrainian Oleksandr Sacharuk with a tie of 1: 1 only by the referee's decision. He won the European Championship silver medal . At the 1998 World Cup in Tehran, he had to face four tough opponents. He won against Mevlana Kulac from Turkey and Iwan Zonow from Bulgaria, clearly defeating Zonow with 9: 0 points, against Chechenol Mongush from Russia and against Gholamreza Mohammadi from Iran and therefore had to defeat 11. Satisfy space.

In 1999, Herman Kantojeu had to admit defeat at the European Championships in Minsk after victories against Wassili Zeiher from Germany and Thomas Röthlisberger this time against Iwan Zonow, who achieved a 6-1 point win in his revenge. At this year's World Cup in Ankara he lost again in his first fight against Zonow, but there his defeat was very narrow with 5: 6 points. After defeating Ludek Burian from the Czech Republic, he lost his third fight against Eric Akin from the United States and only reached 17th place, which was not enough for qualifying for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney .

He therefore had to contest three difficult qualifying tournaments at the beginning of 2000. He came in 3rd place in Minsk behind Samuel Henson from the United States and Haibo Meng from the People's Republic of China , won in Leipzig ahead of Namig Abdullajew from Azerbaijan and Nurdin Donbajew from Uzbekistan and took 9th place in Tokyo . These placements earned him eligibility for the Sydney Games. There he won over Wilfredo García from Cuba , lost to Nurdin Donbajew, won over Maulen Mamirow from Kazakhstan , lost to Samuel Henson and finally lost the fight for the Olympic bronze medal against Amiran Kartanow from Greece just after points (4: 5) and had to therefore be satisfied with the thankless 4th place.

In 2001 Herman Kantojeu decided not to take part in the European Championship and concentrated entirely on the World Championship in Sofia . A measure that paid off, because he was won in Sofia with victories over Stephen Abas , from the United States, Shankar Patel Kripa, India , Arif Formanow, Azerbaijan, Maulen Mamirow and Babak Noursad from Iran, whom he won in the final with 5 : 1 points beat, world champion .

He was unable to build on this great success in the following years at the international championships. After he paused in 2002, he came to the 2003 World Cup after defeats against Chikara Tanabe , Japan , to which he was defeated in a rough battle with just 10:11 points, and Michail Japaridze from Canada , against whom his defeat with 1: 7 points was clear, only to 26th place.

In 2004, Herman Kantojeu was able to qualify again for the Olympic Games with a 2nd place at a qualifying tournament in Bratislava . Before this he also played the European Championship in Ankara , where he came in 7th place with one win and one defeat. In Athens he lost his first fight against Oleksandr Sacharuk from Ukraine and came in 15th place after defeating Baurschan Orasgalijew from Kazakhstan.

He then ended his wrestling career and became a sports teacher and trainer in Minsk.
