Larry Lee "Zeke" Jones (born February 12, 1966 in Ypsilanti , Michigan ) is a former American wrestler . He became world champion in 1991 and won a silver flyweight free style medal in 1992 .

Career

Animated by his brother Johnny, who was a successful wrestler at Iowa State University , he started wrestling at the age of 6. He was trained by James Bryant at Scarlett Middle School in Ann Arbor , Michigan , which he attended. After attending Huron High School in Ann Arbor, he began studying at Iowa State University. There he was trained by Tom Davids and Ernie Gillum. In 1986 he became the American junior flyweight champion. In 1989, he received a position as an assistant coach at Iowa State University. He also participated in the US student championships (NCAA Championships). He took 4th place in 1989 and 2nd place in flyweight in 1990, both in the free style, the style to which he devoted himself exclusively.

In 1989 he also became a member of the renowned American wrestling club Sundkist Kids, where Bobby Douglas was his coach. Jones first became the American flyweight champion in 1989. He repeated this success in 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994 and 1997.

Zeke Jones' international career began with a 2nd place at the 1986 Junior World Championships (Espoirs) in flyweight. This career only continued in 1989 when he was used at the Pan American Championships in Colorado Springs after winning his first USA championship . He lost there in flyweight to the Cuban Alfonso Leyva and came in 2nd place. In 1989 and 1990 he also started at the World Championships in Martigny / Switzerland and Tokyo . In Martigny he finished 7th, and in Tokyo he just missed a medal with 4th place.

In 1991 Zeke Jones came third at the Pan American Games in Havana behind Carlos Valera Gonzales , Cuba and Bernardo Olvera Gonzalez, Mexico . The experts were all the more astonished when a completely different Zeke Jones presented himself at this year's World Cup in Varna . He was in excellent shape there and defeated Valentin Jordanow from Bulgaria in the final battle , who had been world champion four times by then . He became the new title holder ahead of Jordanow, Vladimir Togusow from Ukraine and Constantin Corduneanu from Romania .

At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , Zeke Jones won over Boutchich Choukri, Tunisia , Alfonso Leyva, Constantin Corduneanu , Mitsuru Satō from Japan , the 1988 Olympic champion and Kim Sun-hak from South Korea. In the fight for the Olympic gold medal he had no chance against the North Korean Li Hak-Son , because he clearly defeated him with 8: 1 technical points.

At the 1993 World Cup in Toronto , he reached 4th place. Which wrestler he lost and therefore did not get into the medal ranks cannot be determined because of the poor sources of those years. The same applies in a similar form to the 1994 World Championships in Istanbul , where he only came in 14th place, and in 1995 in Atlanta , where he came in 3rd place. Individual results from these championships are not even included in the specialist journal Der Ringer , only the list of results with places 1 to 10 is reproduced. At the 1997 World Cup in Krasnoyarsk , Zeke Jones lost his first fight against Jun Ju Dong from North Korea, after which he won over Jose Manuel Restrepo Gonzales from Colombia and Nazim Alidjanow from Moldova . Another defeat against Ivan Zonow threw him out of the competition. He eventually finished eleventh.

1995 Zeke Jones won the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata in flyweight in front of Carlos Valera Gonzales and Selwyn Tam from Canada . He did not take part in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta for unknown reasons.

After completing his career as an active wrestler, in which he achieved his success mainly through his outstanding techniques, he took on a number of coaching posts. He was the main coach or assistant coach of the US freestyle team at the Olympic Games and World Championships several times. He was also a trainer at various universities. Since 2008 he has been the head coach of the US freestyle team again.
