Pan American Games are played every four years, one year before the Summer Olympics . The competitions take place mainly in the Olympic sports for athletes from the American continent. These competitions are organized by the Pan American Sports Organization according to the rules of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the various national sports associations. The program includes futsal and squash as non-Olympic sports .

The games were in 1940 during a meeting of the Pan-American Congress in Buenos Aires ( Argentina called) into being to facilitate closer links between the athletes of the Americas.

The First Pan American Games were supposed to take place in 1942, but the Second World War ruined this plan. The competition was first held in Buenos Aires in 1951. In the period that followed, the games took place in various cities on the continent. In 1990 the only Pan American Winter Games to date were held in Las Leñas .
