Pan American Games 1971

The VI. Pan-American Games were played from July 30th to August 17th, 1971 in the Colombian city of Cali . The city won the contract during the PSO meeting on the sidelines of the 1967 Games. The candidacy narrowly prevailed against the one from Champ (Missouri).

2,935 athletes from 32 nations took part in the games. The central competition venue was the Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero .

Competitions in 17 sports were held during the Pan American Games. The most successful nation was the United States with a total of 218 medals. During the triple jump competition, the Cuban Pedro Pérez set a new world record with 17.40 meters.
