The 15th Pan-American Games were held from July 13th to 29th in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro . About 5,600 athletes from 42 countries took part, competing in 34 sports.

Choice of venue

On August 24, 2002, the PSO chose Rio de Janeiro. The only opponent was the Texas city of San Antonio . 30 of the 51 members chose the Brazilian city in a secret ballot.

mascot

The mascot was a sun named Cauê.
