The Ginásio do Maracanãzinho (short: Maracanãzinho . German Small Maracanã ) is a sports and event hall in the Brazilian metropolis of Rio de Janeiro . It is officially named Ginásio Gilberto Cardoso after a former president of the Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . Gilberto Ferreira Cardoso was president of the club from 1951 to 1955 and died of a heart attack while playing a basketball game at his club .
The hall currently has 11,800 seats. The Ginásio do Maracanãzinho is located in the immediate vicinity of the Estádio do Maracanã football stadium and the Parque Aquático Júlio Delamare swimming stadium and is part of the Complexo Esportivo do Maracanã ( German sports complex Maracanã ). At the 2016 Summer Olympics , volleyball competitions were held in the arena.
history
The inauguration took place on September 24, 1954. Shortly after the opening, the first major event took place in the Maracanãzinho . It served as the venue for the 1954 World Basketball Championship , which was held from October 22 to November 5. The arena had a capacity of 25,000 visitors for the championships. Nine years later, the basketball world championship made another stop in Maracanãzinho . The Brazilian national basketball team was able to defend its 1959 title in front of a home crowd .
In addition to the sporting events, there were also concerts and other cultural events. It occurred u. a. the group Secos & Molhados , Maria Bethânia , Gilberto Gil , Chico Buarque , Ney Matogrosso , Caetano Veloso , Tom Jobim and Geraldo Vandré . The music festival Festival Internacional da Canção took place from 1966 to 1972 . The choice for Miss Brasil was a guest at the Maracanãzinho from 1958 to 1969 and from 1971 to 1972 . The 1970 contest had to be moved to the Pavilhão de São Cristóvão in Rio because a fire destroyed the inner roof paneling.
In 1975 the ice revue Holiday on Ice was a guest in the sports hall. In 1982 the men's volleyball tournament Mundialito was held in Maracanãzinho . Host Brazil won the final of the preparatory tournament for the 1982 World Cup in a tight final against the Soviet Union with 3-2 sets after 3:25 hours. The arena was, along with Brasília and Curitiba , one of three venues for the 1990 men's volleyball world championship . In addition to the group A games with the hosts, the semi-finals, the third place match and the final took place in Rio de Janeiro.
renovation
In October 2003, the Ginásio do Maracanãzinho closed its doors for an extensive renovation with a view to the volleyball competitions of the Pan American Games 2007 . The round building received u. a. a new domed roof made of a steel construction with a translucent plastic element. This ensures that the hall can be supplied with natural light and fresh air. The hall was also equipped with air conditioning and a video cube was installed under the roof . The grandstands have also been rebuilt so that the spectators have a good view from all seats. 150 special seats for disabled spectators have been created in the stands. The lower grandstand area can be moved for various cultural events such as concerts or shows. The hall floor was raised by 60 centimeters. Two spiral ramps were built at the entrances for better accessibility.
The total financial volume of the renovation work amounted to 97 million R $ (around 36.6 million euros ). The capacity fell from 13,613 to 11,800 places. After the renovation, the sports hall will be equipped for volleyball , basketball , handball , futsal and tennis .
On June 30, 2007, the arena was reopened with the women's volleyball match between Brazil and Serbia (3: 1). In the volleyball competitions of the Pan American Games 2007, the Brazilians won the gold medal on July 28, 2007 by beating the USA 3-0 in the final . In the women’s final on July 19, 2007, the Brazilians lost to the team from Cuba with 2: 3 sets.
Calçada da Fama do Maracanãzinho
On April 18, 2009 the Hall of Fame named Calçada da Fama do Maracanãzinho opened in the hall. Brazilian as well as foreign athletes are honored there.
