Pontal (Rio de Janeiro)

Pontal is a peninsula and a stretch of beach in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes district in the west of the Brazilian city ​​of Rio de Janeiro . During the 2016 Summer Olympics , Pontal hosted the walking competitions in athletics and the time trial in cycling.

The men's and women's time trial was held on August 10, 2016 on the 29.8 km long Grumari track . The race started on the Estrada do Pontal . The first ascent (Grumari ascent) took place after 9.7 kilometers and the second (Grota Funda ascent) after 19.2 kilometers, before the drivers came back to Pontal via Avenida Lúcio Costa . The men had to drive through the course twice, the women only once. The section was also part of the route in the road races.

The start and finish of the walking competitions were at Praça do Pontal on Avenida Lúcio Costa . The route initially led in a north-easterly direction to Rua Eduardo Pederneiras and then after a turn back to the start / finish. We continued to the intersection of Avenida Gilka Machado / Estrada do Pontal and again to the starting point. When the men walked 50 km , they did not go back to the start at this intersection, but continued on the Estrada do Pontal . At Rua Geraldo Irineo Joifily there was a turning point from which the route led back towards the start / finish.
