The Velódromo Municipal do Rio , also Velódromo Olímpico is a velodrome in the Brazilian Rio de Janeiro . It was built for use at the 2016 Olympic Games .
history
The predecessor: the Barra Velodrome
The facilities for the 2007 Pan American Games included a sports complex near the Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet , which also housed the Barra Velodrome . This indoor cycle track for track cycling was the first in Brazil and the second in South America with a wooden covering ( Siberian pine ). The railway was built by the Dutch architect Sander Douma Architects . In 2013 the velodrome was dismantled in order to build a new cycling track for the 2016 Olympic Games in the same place, as the original one did not meet the criteria of the World Cycling Association Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) for Olympic competitions. A conversion of the Velodrome according to these specifications would have cost as much as the new building.
The Olympic Velodrome
The Velódromo Olímpico , whose roof is shaped like a bicycle helmet , was designed by the Brazilian architects B | AC. The velodrome itself was designed by the German architect Ralph Schürmann designed, whose company has seven Olympic cycling tracks, including the Laoshan Velodrome for the Games in Beijing had planned. The run itself is - according to international standards - 250 meters long, seven meters wide and has a curve superelevation of 44 degrees.
The new construction of the sports facility turned out to be the most difficult project of all competition venues due to constant delays and ultimately the replacement of the construction company. All 45 planned test competitions ultimately had to be canceled. A construction company went bankrupt and the track itself, which was ready for assembly, could only be installed late because the hall was not ready. The cycling track was only handed over a few days before the start of the games on July 25, 2016.
In the year after the Olympic Games, on July 31, 2017, the Velodrome was partially badly damaged by fire. The fire was caused by a small, handcrafted hot air balloon . Although banned, these balloons are common in Brazil and keep causing fire when they collide with buildings. Nobody was injured in the fire in the velodrome; part of the roof collapsed and destroyed the wooden track.
