The Arena Fonte Nova , officially Complexo Esportivo Cultural Professor Octávio Mangabeira , is a football stadium in Salvador , Brazil and offers space for around 55,000 spectators. It stands on the ground of the Estádio Fonte Nova , which was demolished in 2010 for the new building. The brewery Grupo Petrópolis secured the naming rights for the new stadium from 2013 to 2023. Hence the full name of Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova .

The German architecture firm Schulitz + Partner in cooperation with the engineering firm Setepla (São Paulo) is responsible for the design .

The design combines the tradition of the former stadium with modern elements of new stadiums and a new roof structure. On the west side, the characteristics of the stadium, which is characterized by the hillside location, are retained, with new space being created in accordance with FIFA requirements. While parts of the existing stands will be reused in the north and east, new areas will be used for a football museum and a congress center. In the south, the characteristic opening to the lake to the south is retained in order to ensure good ventilation of the stadium.

As with the World Cup stadium in Hanover (AWD Arena), a closed ring construction was developed for the roof construction in cooperation with RFR Stuttgart (spoked wheel principle). The geometry of the roof skin and the load-bearing rope rings are decisive for the extremely material-minimized roof in order to optimally meet the various functional requirements (sight lines, sun protection, drainage, area exposed to wind, static height). The specialty of the Fonte Nova solution is the roof membrane arranged between the rope rings, which is pierced by relatively high air supports. The weight is 45 kg / m².

As recommended by FIFA, the stadium in Salvador will be certified according to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Among other things, water consumption is reduced through the use of rainwater, concrete from the demolished stadium is reused, energy consumption of the stadium is optimized, the construction process is organized according to aspects of sustainability and the primary energy consumption of the individual materials is assessed.

The horseshoe shape of the stadium not only allows good ventilation, but also enables year-round use of the stadium for a wide variety of events: Even during the football season, a stage for concerts and theater can be set up and dismantled on the free area of the southern opening, so that concert events can take place continuously regardless of the football season. The floating restaurant above the southern opening can be used daily.

history

In May 2013, almost three weeks before the start of the Confederations Cup, a small part of the roof skin tore after heavy rainfall and some parts fell off the structure.

The Fonte Nova arena was the venue for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup . It was also one of the venues for the soccer competitions of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro .
