The Kashima Soccer Stadium ( Japanese 茨城 県 立 カ シ マ サ ッ カ ー ス タ ジ ア ム , Ibaraki-kenritsu Kashima Sokkā Sutajiamu , German  " Kashima Football Stadium of Ibaraki Prefecture" ) is a football stadium in the Japanese city ​​of Kashima in the prefecture of Ibaraki .

history

You need a suitable venue to take part in the J. League , so the decision was made in 1991 to build a new stadium and in March 1993 the construction work was completed. At the time, it had around 15,000 seats and was the first stadium in Japan to be built exclusively for football.

The first game took place on May 4, 1993 between the Kashima Antlers and Fluminense Rio de Janeiro from Brazil . The stadium was expanded for the 2002 World Cup. In May 2001 the arena was completed. The construction costs were 213 million euros. It currently has 42,300 spectators.

The stadium is the home of the Japanese football club and record champions Kashima Antlers , who play their home games in the J. League here.
