The Arena Corinthians (referred to as Arena de São Paulo in FIFA tournaments ) is a football stadium built for the 2014 World Cup in Itaquera , a district of the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo . It had a capacity of around 68,000 spectators for the World Cup. The largest video wall in the world was installed on the facade (the largest screen to date was in the AT&T Stadium in Arlington , the home of the Dallas Cowboys ). After the dismantling of the additional grandstands specially built for the World Cup, the arena has 48,000 seats.
The World Cup arena in São Paulo was the venue for the opening game of the 2014 FIFA World Cup on June 12, 2014 and has served as the home stadium of the Corinthians São Paulo club since the end of the World Cup .
Establishment
In the spring of 2013, the building owners threatened an immediate construction stop if the financing was not secured as soon as possible. The delay would have made a timely completion impossible.
In November 2013, an accident occurred during construction work on the roof of the stadium. An inadequately founded construction crane fell on the roof structure and tore off parts of it. Two people died in the incident. In March 2014 another worker died in the construction of the arena, he fell from a great height while he was assembling an additional grandstand.
On May 18, 2014, around a month before the first World Cup match, the stadium underwent its first official test when the league match between Corinthians São Paulo and Figueirense FC took place in front of 36,123 spectators . At this point in time, the arena was not yet completely finished; work still had to be done on the additional grandstands.
