The Australian national women's football team represents Australia in international women's football . The national team reports to the Australian Football Association and has been coached by Ante Milicic since February 18, 2019 . The Australian selection won the Oceanic Championship three times. After moving to the Asian Football Confederation , they took part in the Asian Cup for the first time in 2006, where they reached the final straight away and lost to China on penalties . In 2010 the Asian Cup was won for the first time. In the final, North Korea was defeated on penalties. On the other hand, Australia does not take part in the Asian Games, in which the Asian women's senior teams participate, as Australia is not a member of the Olympic Council of Asia .

The players in the Australian selection are called "Fighting Matildas" based on the song Waltzing Matilda .

In the FIFA world rankings published on July 22, 2011 , Australia achieved a top 10 position for the first time with 9th place and was the second best team in the AFC after Japan until September 2011 . Thanks to the results of the qualifying tournament for the 2016 Olympic Games , the Australians climbed to 5th place and thus became the best team in the AFC for the first time. In December 2017, they achieved their best position to date with 4th place.
