She played from 1994 to 2009 for the Australian national soccer team , of which she was the team captain from 2003 until she retired. She has played the most international matches of any Australian football player and was able to play in all positions, but gave her team the most impetus as a full-back. Salisbury took part with Australia in the 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007 World Championships and the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games .
Career
societies
Salisbury played three years in the Japanese league and two years in the US league . She then ended her career with her home club Newcastle United Jets in the W-League , which was introduced in 2008, and worked as an assistant coach at the same time. At the end of the league round in 2008/09 they were in second place, but then lost on January 10, 2009 in the semi-finals of the final round with 0-1 against Canberra United . This was the last game for her and Joanne Peters . Her only goal of the season was the following goal on October 31, 2008 in the 89th minute in the 3-2 defeat by Adelaide United . In the following season, Newcastle could not win a game and finished last.
National team
Salisbury was called up for the first time in 1994 at the age of 20 for the national team of Australia and came in a game against Russia for the first time, where she scored a goal. Her first major tournament was the 1995 World Cup, where she was part of the Australian squad and started the first two group games against Denmark (0: 5) and China (2: 4). Their team was eliminated after a 1: 4 against the USA in the last group game. On October 9, 1998, she scored five goals at the 1998 Oceania Championship in a 21-0 win - the Australians' highest international win - against American Samoa . Australia won the championship and qualified for the 1999 World Cup. There she was there again and was used in the three group games, where she managed the goal for Australia in the 1: 3 defeat in the last group game against China.
It was also taken into account for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and used in the three group games. She scored the opening goal for Australia in a 1-1 draw against Sweden . Since the other two games against Germany (0: 3) and Brazil (1: 2) were lost, the Australians were eliminated as the bottom of the group.
At the 2003 Oceania Championship , which Australia won and qualified for the 2003 World Cup , you scored two goals. At the World Cup she was then the captain of the Australian team . The Australians were eliminated after two 1: 2 defeats against Russia and Ghana and a 1: 1 against China after the preliminary round. Australia qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games by playing two games against Fiji and Papua New Guinea . At the Olympic tournament , she then came to three appearances in the group games and Australia reached the quarter-finals as the best third in the group against Sweden, but they lost 2-1. In the last group game against the USA on August 17, 2004, she was the second Australian to make her 100th international match . On January 28, 2005, she set the national record of Anissa Tann-Darby with her 102nd international game at the four-nation tournament in China in the game against Germany and then beat him in the next game.
Since Australia switched from the Oceanic Association to the Asian Association on January 1, 2006, they had to qualify for the next World Cup via the 2006 Asian Women's Football Championship , which Australia was allowed to host. She reached the final against the People's Republic of China with her team. After the two teams parted 2-2 after 120 minutes, there was a penalty shootout, but Salisbury did not participate. Since two of their teammates shot while all the Chinese scored, Australia became vice-Asian champions. As finalists, however, they were qualified for the World Cup in China . Before the World Cup, however, they missed qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games with two defeats against North Korea . On April 21, 2007, on the occasion of the draw for the World Cup, a FIFA World Cup team played a game against World Cup hosts China, for which she was nominated and contributed a goal to make it 3-2. At the World Cup, in which she was the first Australian to take part for the fourth time, Australia won their first World Cup against Ghana in their first group game . In the last group game against Canada , she scored 2-2 in stoppage time. This is the first time they have reached the quarter-finals of a World Cup. But they then lost this with 2: 3 against the eventual finalists Brazil .
Salisbury played their 151st and final international match against Italy on January 31, 2009 . She also scored her last international goal. In total, she scored 38 international goals as a player mainly playing in defense. So she was also the record scorer for the Matildas until May 16, 2014, but was then outbid by Kate Gill , who has meanwhile scored 41 international goals.
By 2015 she was the Australian record holder with 12 World Cup games in this regard. She was then replaced on June 27, 2015 by Lisa de Vanna , who made her 13th World Cup game in the quarter-finals against world champions Japan . Since the Matildas lost 1-0, they could not increase the record.
