Two football competitions were held at the 2004 Summer Olympics in the Greek capital, Athens .
While the respective national teams competed in the women's tournament, teams with age restrictions up to 23 years competed in the men's tournament.
After 1928, two South American teams were in the men's final for the first time, and Argentina won the gold medal for the first time after two silver medals in 1928 and 1996 without conceding a goal. For the first time, only one European team reached the quarter-finals, in which at least one representative from each confederation was represented for the first time. For the first time since 1968, an Asian team reached the semi-finals with Iraq.
Venues
The games were played in the Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion on Crete , in the Pampeloponnisiako Stadium in Patras , in the Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens , in the Kaftanzoglio Stadium in Thessaloniki and in the Panthessaliko Stadium in Volos , as well as in Athens in the Olympic Stadium Spiridon Luis (only final).

The third edition of the Olympic women's soccer tournament took place for the first time with ten teams. These were assigned to two groups of three and one group of four. In addition to the first and second placed in each group, the third of the group of four and the better third of the group of three qualified for the quarter-finals.
The minimum age of 16 for female players, which has been in force since 1996, has been lifted.
The games were played in the Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion (Crete), the Pampeloponnisiako Stadium in Patras, the Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens, the Kaftanzoglio Stadium in Thessaloniki and the Panthessaliko Stadium in Volos. In contrast to the men's tournament, the final did not take place in the Olympic Stadium in Athens, but in the Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens.
For the women, the final was the first time there was a duel between North and South America and the US players won the gold medal for the second time after 1996 .
Host Greece were the first team to go out without a goal.
The bronze medal remained for world and European champions Germany as it was 4 years before.
