Kerstin Garefrekes (born September 4, 1979 in Ibbenbüren ) is a former German soccer player who was under contract with the first division club 1. FFC Frankfurt from the 2004/05 season and was active for the senior national team from 2001 to 2011 .

career path

Kerstin Garefrekes grew up in Steinbeck , a district of the Recke community bordering her place of birth . After graduating from high school in Ibbenbüren, she decided to pursue a civil service career in the higher service . She completed her studies at the University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration in North Rhine-Westphalia in Münster and worked until the end of 2004 as a city inspector at the Rheine social welfare office with a focus on “granting benefits for the homeless”. To be on the safe side, Garefrekes took time off before moving to 1. FFC Frankfurt in order to be able to return to her place of work later. In Frankfurt she studied public management until 2008, her diploma thesis was strategic management in club women's football .

She now works in the controlling department of the Frankfurt City Treasury for the Environment Department with a flexible 21-hour week.

Athletic career

Garefrekes started playing soccer at Grün-Weiß Steinbeck in 1986 and then moved to DJK Arminia Ibbenbüren . In 1998 she joined the newly founded FFC Heike Rheine , with whom she had to relegate from the Bundesliga as the second-bottom table after her first season . After the direct resurgence, she was the most successful goalscorer of her team every season.

On November 17, 2001 she made her debut in the senior national team , which defeated the Netherlands in the qualifying game for the 2003 World Cup in Enschede ; she came on in the 86th minute for Martina Müller . She scored her first international goal on January 27, 2002 in a 3-1 win against Norway in the four-nation tournament, with the goal of the interim 1-0 in the 50th minute.

With the national team she was world champion in 2003 and 2007, and European champion in 2005 and 2009. In 2004 she was the top scorer in the Bundesliga with 26 goals . In the same year she moved to 1. FFC Frankfurt and won the bronze medal with the national team at the Olympic Games in Athens , as well as in Beijing in 2008 .

With Frankfurt she became German champion in 2005 and a year later winner of the UEFA Women's Cup . Garefrekes developed into one of the key players in the DFB team. At the World Cup in 2011 she acted at times as captain . In August 2011, she ended her career in the DFB selection. With 130 internationals she ranks 12th among the national players with the most internationals.

Garefrekes moved to Washington Spirit on June 14, 2014 on loan until the end of the season in the US National Women's Soccer League . She made her debut on June 28, 2014 in a 1-0 win in the away game against Houston Dash as a substitute.

On May 16, 2016 Garefrekes finished with her 355th Bundesliga game, after 130 appearances in the national team and as world champion (2003, 2007), European champion (2005, 2009), Olympic third (2004, 2008), three Champions League / UEFA -Cup victories (2006, 2008, 2015), three German championships (2005, 2007, 2008) and four DFB Cup victories (2007, 2008, 2011, 2014) in their footballing career.
