Houston Dash is a women's football franchise from Houston . It was founded in 2013 and has played in the National Women's Soccer League , the highest division in women's football in the USA , since the 2014 season .

history

On December 12, 2013, the first details of the franchise, including the team name and logo, were announced at a press conference broadcast on the Internet. The inclusion of the Houston Dash represented the first expansion of the field of participants of the NWSL, which had started playing with the 2013 season .

The first manager of the franchise was former professional soccer player Brian Ching , and from December 2013 the former US national coach Tony DiCicco acted as a consultant for coaching and squad planning .

On January 3, 2014, the signing of Randy Waldrum as the first head coach in the history of the franchise was announced.

In the six seasons in which the franchise has now participated in the NWSL, the play-offs could never be reached. After Houston finished last of the regular season in 2014 , the team finished 5th in the following season and narrowly missed the play-off participation of the best four teams. In 2016 and 2017 Houston finished the regular season in eighth place. In 2018 the team reached sixth place in the regular season and again missed qualifying for the play-offs. The team ended the 2019 season in seventh place in the table.

organization

Houston Dash is run by the same organization as the Men franchise the Houston Dynamo in Major League Soccer . After the Portland Thorns FC , "sister team" of the Portland Timbers , the Dash were the second NWSL offshoot of an MLS participant.

At the end of the 2018 season, President Chris Canetti, who had held the post since 2010, left the franchise. He will take over the chairmanship of Houston’s bid committee as the venue for the 2026 World Cup . In early November, the franchise announced that John Walker, who previously served in the management of the Memphis Grizzlies from the NBA , would be his successor.
