WPS

As a franchisee, the Chicago Red Stars were one of the founding members of Women's Professional Soccer in the fall of 2007. The first edition of the league, initially planned for 2007, was postponed to 2009 due to the 2007 Women's World Cup and the 2008 Olympic Games . In June 2008, the team got its name, referring to the red stars in the flag of the city of Chicago.

In the 2009 debut season , the Chicago Red Stars played in the back of the league. After five wins from 20 games, the team around players like Caroline Jönsson , Lindsay Tarpley , Karen Carney and Cristiane finished sixth in the table.

Also in the 2010 season , the team did not get past sixth and penultimate place in the final table. After the management failed to find new investors for the team after the end of the season, the team stopped playing in the WPS.

In between years

After the 2010 season, Arnim Whisler became the sole investor to take over the franchise, leading it through the 2011 season of the Women's Premier Soccer League and the 2012 season of the Women's Premier Soccer League Elite.

NWSL

On November 24, 2012 the founding of a new women's soccer professional league, the National Women's Soccer League, was announced in the USA. The Red Stars were confirmed as a founding member of this league by the three North American associations USSF , CAF and FEMEXFUT .

In the first two seasons, the franchise missed participation in the play-offs of the top four teams of the regular season. After a sixth place in the 2013 season , fifth place was achieved in the following year , level on points with the last play-off participant Washington Spirit .

In the 2015 season , he made it into the play-offs for the first time with second place after the regular season. There Chicago failed in the semi-finals at eventual winners FC Kansas City .

In 2016 , 2017 and 2018 , the Chicago Red Stars reached the play-offs as third and fourth in the regular season, but lost the semi-finals (2016 after extra time against Washington Spirit, 2017 and 2018 against North Carolina Courage ).

The 2019 regular season closed Chicago in second place in the table and thus reached the play-offs again. There they made it into the final of the NWSL for the first time with a semi-final victory over Portland Thorns FC . in this, however, the team failed on defending champion North Carolina Courage and had to be satisfied with the runner-up.
