Julie Johnston Ertz (* 6. April 1992 as Julie Beth Johnston in Phoenix , Arizona ) is an American football national player , since the 2014 season for the Chicago Red Stars plays. Ertz started out in defense and won the U-20 World Cup title in 2012 and the 2015 World Cup with the national team. She now plays in the central midfield, where she defended the world title in 2019.

Ertz played during her studies at Santa Clara University for the university team there, the Santa Clara Broncos . In the college draft for the 2014 NWSL season , she was drafted third in the first round by the Chicago Red Stars and made her debut there on April 19, 2014 in the home game against the Western New York Flash . In this game, Ertz scored her first goal in the professional field with the winning goal to make it 1-0.

National team

Ertz played for the U-15, U-18, U-20 and U-23 teams of the USA and took part in the U-20 World Cup in 2012 , where she won the title with her team and personally was awarded the bronze ball as the third best player of the tournament behind Dzsenifer Marozsán and the Japanese Hanae Shibata .

On February 9, 2013, she came in a friendly against Scotland for the first time for the US A selection.

In 2015 she took part in the Algarve Cup with the USA and scored her first international goal in a 2-0 win in the final against France .

Ertz was also called up for the US squad for the 2015 World Cup . She was used in all seven games and did not miss a minute. After the group game against Nigeria , she was named "Player of the Game". In the semi-finals she caused a penalty by fouling Alexandra Popp in the penalty area, but Célia Šašić was unable to convert. Ertz was lucky that the referee did not consider the foul as an emergency brake and therefore only received a yellow card . In the final against Japan , she was played before conceding her first goal and then she underwent an own goal to make it 4-2. But in the end she was able to celebrate a 5-2 victory with her team and the win of the world title. Even before the final, she was nominated for the prize of the best female player, which her team-mate Carli Lloyd received.

Ertz was also on the roster for the 2016 Summer Olympics qualifier , won by the US, and appeared in four games. At the Olympic tournament she was used in the group game against New Zealand and in the quarter-finals against Sweden . This was lost on penalties , which meant that the USA missed the semi-finals for the first time. She had a total of nineteen missions in 2016. In 2017, she only made twelve international matches, with two games missing due to her wedding and subsequent honeymoon. In 2018 she was back in full action and made 16 international matches. She won three tournaments, the SheBelieves Cup 2018 , the Tournament of Nations 2018 and the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup 2018 . The USA qualified for the 2019 World Cup by winning the Gold Cup. On May 1, 2019, it was nominated for the 2019 World Cup . At the World Cup she was only not used in the third group game against Sweden. She scored her first World Cup goal in a 3-0 win over Chile .

On March 5, 2020, she played her 100th international match in the first game of the SheBelieves Cup 2020 as the 40th US player .
