The National Women's Soccer League 2020 is the eighth season of the US women's soccer league National Women's Soccer League to be. The regular season was originally supposed to start on April 18 and end on October 18, 2020. Due to the 2020 Summer Olympics , the league should take a break from July 20-26. The regular season should be followed by a play-off with the four best teams of the season, which should play the NWSL championship in two semi-finals and one final.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , all preparation games were canceled on March 12th. In addition, all training activities were prohibited by the NWSL; This order was last extended on April 24th to May 15th inclusive.

On May 27, the NWSL announced that the Challenge Cup 2020 will mark the return to gaming operations after the COVID-19 pandemic. The 25-game tournament will be played without spectators from June 27 to July 26 and will be hosted by Dell Loy Hansen, owner of Utah Royals FC . On June 22nd, the exact rules for the tournament were published. At the same time, the regular season and the play-offs were canceled.

The Sky Blue FC should in the stadium of the MLS teams New York Red Bulls , the, Red Bull Arena in Harrison in New Jersey move. The Washington Spirit team should play their twelve home games equally at the Maryland SoccerPlex as well as in the Audi Field used by the MLS team DC United and in Segra Field used by the second team from DC United.

    The NWSL Challenge Cup 2020, organized by Dell Loy Hansen, the owner of Utah Royals FC , consisted of a preliminary round and a subsequent play-off.

    In the preliminary round, all nine teams were originally supposed to play four games each to determine the seeding list for the next tournament. The eight best teams should then reach the play-off, which takes place as a simple knockout round . On June 22nd, however, Orlando Pride withdrew after a total of six positive COVID-19 tests among players and four more in the support staff. The following day, the NWSL published an updated schedule of the remaining eight teams.

    Final round

    The quarter-finals were played on the basis of the seeding list determined in the preliminary round. Here the first met the eighth, the second against the seventh, the third against the sixth and the fourth against the fifth.

    If a game in the final round was tied after 90 minutes, no extra time was played , but a direct penalty shoot-out to determine the winner.
