Rosemary Kathleen Lavelle (born May 14, 1995 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) is an American football player . She has played for Washington Spirit since 2018 and for the United States women's national soccer team since 2017 , with which she won the 2019 World Cup.
Career
College and clubs
She first played for the Sycamore United Soccer Club and since the U-14 for her hometown club Cincinnati United Premier . During her studies at the University of Wisconsin – Madison , Lavelle played for the local university team of the Wisconsin Badgers in the Big Ten Conference and received numerous awards during that time. At the same time, from 2014 she sporadically worked for the Dayton Dutch Lions in the USL W-League and Seattle Sounders .
On January 12, 2017, she was signed by the Boston Breakers franchise as the first player in the 2017 NWSL College Draft . After a good start to the season, she suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in June , so that she was out until September. The Breakers finished the season in penultimate place in the table and missed the playoffs significantly. Before the 2018 season , the Breakers were withdrawn from the NWSL for financial reasons . In 2018 she was signed by the Washington Spirit as the first player in the 2018 NWSL Dispersal Draft . Even with their new club it was only enough for the penultimate place in the table. In 2019 they just missed the final round as fifth. Since the league did not pause during the World Cup, it only had six appearances this season.
National team
Lavelle competed with the US U-20 national team in the 2014 CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship , where she was named Best Player. She and her team won the tournament without a goal and thus qualified for the 2014 U-20 Women's World Cup in Canada . Here it was used in all four games. After a 2-0 defeat against eventual world champions Germany , she and her team won against Brazil 1-0 and China 3-0, scoring the last goal. In the quarter-finals against North Korea , which ended 1: 1 after extra time, the US girls lost 3-1 on penalties , where she was one of three missed shooters on her team.
In November 2015, she received an invitation to the senior national team's training camp for the Victory Tour after winning the 2015 World Cup . Her first appearance in the senior national team was on March 4, 2017 as part of the SheBelieves Cup 2017 in the second group game, which she lost 1-0 to England . She was named Player of the Game on her debut. She scored her first goal a month later in a 5-1 friendly against Russia . This was followed by further appearances in June in friendly matches, in which she scored the 1-0 winner against Sweden on June 8, 2017 in Gothenburg . Due to her cruciate ligament tear, she could not be considered for the Tournament of Nations held in July 2017 .
It was not until September that she was reinstated in a 5-0 win against New Zealand in her hometown in front of 30,596 spectators, but was already replaced after 33 minutes so as not to put too much strain on her after the healed injury. She was initially nominated for the SheBelieves Cup 2018 , but then removed from the final squad. After the last place a year earlier, the US team was able to win the tournament this time, although they only scored two goals themselves and won the game against England only with an own goal by the English goalkeeper. At the end of July / beginning of August she was nominated for the Tournament of Nations and played in the three games against Japan (4: 2), last year's winner Australia (1: 1) and Brazil (4: 1, with a goal from Lavelle).
In October 2018 she took part in the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup 2018 with the team . She started four times and was substituted on in the second group game against Panama in the second half. She contributed two goals to the 7-0 win in the group game against Trinidad and Tobago , which she scored within two minutes. In the final against Canada , she scored the 1-0 in the second minute (final score: 2-0). The US team had already qualified for the 2019 World Cup by reaching the finals. It was also used in the friendly matches that followed. In the 1-0 win against Spain on January 22, 2019, she played the ball in her own half to Christen Press , who started a solo effort, which she concluded with the winning goal.
On May 1, 2019, she was nominated for the 2019 World Cup . At the World Cup she was used in six games and scored three goals. Only in the second group game against Chile , when most of the regular players were not used, she only sat on the bench. She was in the starting line-up in six games, but was substituted in five games between the 57th and 89th minute. Only in the final against the Netherlands did she stay on the pitch for 90 minutes and scored the goal to make it 2-0.
