The Dayton Dutch Lions (full name Dayton Dutch Lions Football Club ) are a franchise of amateur football - League USL League Two from Dayton , Ohio . The club, founded in 2009, played in the USL Pro , the then third division in the football league system of the USA , until 2014 . Until 2010, the team played in the USL Premier Development League. Since 2015 the Lions have been playing in PDL again, which is now referred to as USL League Two.

Home games will be played at Dayton Outpatient Center Stadium, located on the grounds of West Carrollton High School in West Carrollton, Ohio .

history

founding

In October 2009, the Dutch Lions Capital Group BV, a Dutch joint venture founded by the companies Tammer Sportmanagement BV, Business and Sports Performance and FinFac Beheer BV, founded Dayton Dutch Lions FC LLC. A little later this acquired the rights to operate a professional soccer team within the United Soccer Leagues in Dayton, Ohio.

The owners are the Dutchmen Erik Tammer and Mike Mossel. Erik Tammer, owner of Tammer Sportmanagement, is a former soccer player, u. a. he was active for SC Heerenveen and Sparta Rotterdam . Mossel played for RBC Roosendaal and the KV Turnhout , later he moved to the USA where he studied at the Xavier University of Cincinnati and then played for the Cincinnati Riverhawks.

First season

The first official game was played on May 8, 2010. Against the Cincinnati Kings they reached a 3: 3. The club's first goalscorer was Eddie Hertsenberg. In the first season, the team played in the Great Lakes Division of the USL PDL Central Conference. At the end of the season you could only reach third place and thus missed the qualification for the play-offs. The appearance in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup ended in the first round against the Rochester Rhinos .

Change to the USL Pro

On July 8, 2010, the Lions announced that they would play in the USL Second Division from next season . At the same time it became known that a women's soccer team will be established in the W-League from the 2011 season . After the USL First Division and the USL-2 were combined to form the USL Pro, Dayton is one of the founding members of the league. Since January 2011 there has been a cooperation with the Dutch club FC Twente Enschede .

In the first game of the 2011 season, the team lost 2-1 to Charleston Battery . Kolby LaCrone scored the first goal in the USL Pro.

In 2012 the team reached the quarter-finals of the US Open Cup. In the third round you could win against the Major League Soccer club Columbus Crew . The Lions then establish the quarterfinals by beating the Michigan Bucks. However, the game could not be won against the eventual cup winners Sporting Kansas City . In the USL Pro, the team again missed the play-offs.

In 2013 they reached the play-offs for the first time. However, it was over here in the quarter-finals.

On January 17, 2011, a 5-year contract was signed with the Dutch first division club FC Twente Enschede. This gives Twente the opportunity to advance the development of its own youth players and to secure talent in the USA. At the same time, Dayton has the chance to borrow players from the Netherlands.

The Lions also maintain partnership relationships with its sister association Cincinnati Dutch Lions ( USL PDL ) and Houston Dutch Lions (USL PDL). These franchises also belong to Erik Tammer's group of owners. The agreements with Twente Enschede also relate to the other teams.

The club has had a cooperation with the Columbus crew since the end of 2013 .

Fan groups

The largest group of fans is called the Orange Legion.

Women's football and youth

Dayton Dutch Lions FC Academy

All youth teams in the franchise are grouped under the name Dayton Dutch Lions FC Academy . All teams started playing in 2011, although there is currently only one team per age group.

DDL Women FC

The women's football team Dayton Dutch Lions FC Women has played in the USL W-League since the 2011 season . There the team plays in the Southeastern Conference.
