The Heerenveen sports club , commonly known in German-speaking countries as SC Heerenveen (proper spelling sc Heerenveen ), is a football club from Heerenveen , Friesland province in the Netherlands .
history
The club was founded on July 20, 1920 as Athleta . From 1921 to October 1922 the association was called Spartaan , after which it was renamed VV Heerenveen . On June 1, 1977, professional football was housed in its own club, sc Heerenveen . The Voetbal Association Heerenveen still exists today.
The club name is officially spelled with lowercase “sc”.
The most famous player to ever play for Heerenveen was Abe Lenstra . In the 1950s he was a multiple national player for the Netherlands . The home game against Ajax Amsterdam on May 7, 1950 is still legendary among Heerenveen fans. 30 minutes before the end the club were already 1: 5 behind and the game seemed hopelessly lost. However, the players managed to catch up and eventually win the game 6-5.
The SC Heerenveen finished 2nd in the Dutch championship 1999/2000 and was then able to qualify for the UEFA Champions League 2000/01 , where the group stage was reached. 2001/02 and 2003/04 was reached 4th place in the championship and thus qualification for the UEFA Cup . Heerenveen ended the 2004/05 season in 5th place. In the 2005/06 UEFA Cup season , the club survived the group stage and failed in the subsequent intermediate round to Steaua Bucharest .
Heerenveen ended the 2005/06 season in 7th place and was therefore unable to qualify for the international competition.
The 2006/2007 season ended in 5th place and qualified for the 1st round of the 2007/08 UEFA Cup . But here they already failed at Helsingborgs IF with 5: 3 and 1: 5.
In the 2007/08 season you could again qualify for the UEFA Cup. In the first round of the 2008/09 UEFA Cup they beat Vitória Setúbal from Portugal 1: 1 and 5: 2 . In the following group stage, however, they could not record any points and thus retired as the last of group E.
In the 2008/09 season, the Norwegian Trond Sollied took over the coaching post from Gertjan Verbeek, who left the SC after four years in the direction of Feyenoord Rotterdam . This year they finished fifth in the table in the Eredivisie and qualified by winning the KNVB Cup for the playoffs of the Europa League 2009/10 . Here they beat PAOK Saloniki 1: 1 away and 0: 0 at home thanks to the away goal rule . But again the club did not get beyond the group stage: Victories over Hertha BSC away and Sporting Lisbon at home as well as two further draws against FK Ventspils and Sporting were not enough for advancement.
Stadion
The home of the club is the Abe Lenstra Stadium , which opened on August 20, 1997 . It holds around 26,800 spectators, 1,000 of them standing. In the 2007/08 season, an average of 25,224 visitors came to the games.
