The Eredivisie 2019/20 was the 64th season of the highest Dutch football league and the 131st competition for the Dutch national championship . It was opened on August 2, 2019 with the game between PEC Zwolle and Willem II Tilburg , the last games took place on March 8, 2020. Due to an order from the state government, the season was declared over at the end of April 2020 in view of the global COVID-19 pandemic , no champions were determined, and there were no promotions and relegations to or from the league.

Changes compared to the 2018/19 season

For this season, the Dutch Football Association decided that the table seventeenth, who had previously taken part in the relegation relegation together with the sixteenth, will also be relegated.

Game operations during the coronavirus pandemic

On March 11, 2020, after 26 match days, the Dutch government had ordered that the game be completely suspended until at least April 1. At the end of April, the League Association announced the government's decision that no more games would be played nationwide until September 1, 2020 and the season would be canceled accordingly. On April 24th, the further consequences of this decision were discussed with the KNVB and UEFA .

As a result, the season was declared over, but all results remained valid. Furthermore, for the first time since 1945 (last phase of World War II ) there was no national champion, and promotions and relegations were also suspended. On the basis of the last valid table constellation - taking into account the fact that no cup winners were played either - the participants in the European Cup were determined. Ajax Amsterdam will take part in the playoffs for the UEFA Champions League, AZ Alkmaar in the second qualifying round for the Champions League, Feyenoord Rotterdam in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League and PSV Eindhoven and Willem II Tilburg in the third and second qualifying round for Europe League. These decisions made at the green table were only valid after confirmation from UEFA, and for example, sixth-placed and cup finalist FC Utrecht announced that they would appeal against them.
