Calvin Stengs (born December 18, 1998 in Nieuw-Vennep ) is a Dutch football player of Surinamese descent. The winger comes from the youth work of the honorary division partner AZ Alkmaar and has been in the first team's squad there since the 2017/18 season . He has also played for the Dutch national team since November 2019 .

Career

Stengs began playing football at the amateur club SV DIOS in his hometown of Nieuw-Vennep and was then briefly active in the youth of HFC Haarlem before moving to the AZ Alkmaar youth academy in 2009 . There he played for various youth selections and was promoted to the U-19 team of the honorary division in summer 2015 . In the A-Junior League, he quickly made it into the rotation. He then spent the next 2016/17 season in the reserve team in the third-class Tweede Divisie and was now active in professional football for the first time. This season he scored six goals and eight assists in 22 league games. These performances were also noticed by the first team coach, John van den Brom . On March 5, 2017, he made his debut in the 1-1 home draw against Excelsior Rotterdam in the Eredivisie .

After he was promoted to the first team for the 2017/18 season, he was in the team's starting line-up for the first time on August 12 (1st matchday) in the 2: 3 away defeat against PSV Eindhoven . In this game he tore his cruciate ligament after just 7 minutes of play and was out for the entire game. He only returned from this injury at the beginning of November 2018 and made it onto the starting grid. On January 19, 2019, he met AZ for the first time in a 3-0 home win against FC Utrecht . He scored three goals and prepared four in 21 appearances this 2018/19 season . In the following season 2019/20 he improved and scored five goals and eight assists in 25 league games.

National team

On March 24, 2019, Stengs made his debut in a friendly international match against the US U23 team for the Dutch U21 national team .

On November 8, 2019, Bondscoach Ronald Koeman's striker was nominated for the first time for the senior national team of the Netherlands together with his teammate Myron Boadu as part of the European Championship qualifiers against Northern Ireland and Estonia .
