The 2018/19 Eredivisie was the 63rd season of the top Dutch football league and the 130th competition for the Dutch national championship . It began on August 10, 2018 with the play of PEC Zwolle against SC Heerenveen and was suspended from 25 December 2018 through 18 January 2019 a winter break. The last matchday was played on May 15, 2019.
PSV Eindhoven started the season as defending champions . The 2009/10 Eredivisie champion, FC Twente Enschede , had to relegate to the second-rate Eerste Divisie for the first time since the 1980s . Since the champion of the Eerste Divisie 2017/18 , Jong Ajax , was not eligible for promotion, the runner-up, Fortuna Sittard , played in the Eredivisie.
Season course
The 33rd matchday was postponed by the KNVB to the period between May 15th and 18th, three days after the actual final matchday. The reason was the semi-finals of the cup winners Ajax Amsterdams in the Champions League . On the last day of the match, Ajax won the title of national champion for the 34th time and was able to crown an outstanding season with the “double” of championship and KNVB cup .

Promotion / relegation
Places 16 and 17 of the Eredivisie and the eight best-placed teams of the Eerste Divisie eligible for promotion played in three play-off rounds, each with a return game for promotion or relegation . Second teams from Eredivisie clubs could not be promoted to the Eredivisie and were therefore excluded from the play-offs. This affected the third-placed second team of PSV Eindhoven . The season winners of the Eerste Divisie, played in four phases, were qualified for the play-offs, regardless of their position in the overall table, but the season winners Sparta, Den Bosch and Almere were able to qualify regularly for the play-offs, and the fourth season winner Twente rose as champions on.
In the first round, the four lowest-placed teams from the Eerste Divisie played against each other (10th against 7th and 9th against 8th). The two winners of the first round will meet the 16th and 17th of the Eredivisie in round 2. At the same time, the four higher ranked teams in the Eerste Divisie play against each other (6th against 2nd and 5th against 4th). In round 3, the four winners from the second round met each other.
