The Van Donge & De Roo Stadium is a football stadium in Rotterdam in the western province of South Holland , the Netherlands . The football club Excelsior Rotterdam plays its games here.
history
1902-1939
After the founding of the Excelsior Rotterdam club in 1902, the team played on a field on the Woudesteyn manor until 1907 . Then horse races were held on the premises and the team had to move. After only one year, however, due to the poor location, they returned to the old venue by renting the property for 50 guilders per year. In 1921 Excelsior Rotterdam rose to the top division. The Dutch football association KNVB rejected the venue, however; the club had to go to the stadiums of other Rotterdam football teams such as B. Dodge Feyenoord or Sparta . In 1922 they found a new home in the Toepad sports park in the Kralingen district. There they remained until 1939, then was in the field Marine - barracks built.
1939-1992
After a renovation, Excelsior returned to its old Woudenstein venue. The first game took place between Excelsior Rotterdam and a selection of Rotterdam footballers on September 9, 1939. Excelsior won the game 9-0. Anti-aircraft guns were set up in the stadium during the Second World War . At the end of the war in the “ Hongerwinter ” of 1944/45, trees were illegally felled for heating and wooden houses were demolished. So that the wooden stands did not end up as firewood, the stadium was guarded by volunteers.
After the war, the stadium's 8,000-seat capacity was no longer sufficient. Many a game had to be played in De Kuip . After a few extensions there were 11,000 places. In 1958 the facility was modernized with a new grandstand on the north side. In 1970 Excelsior rose to the Eredivisie and in 1973 a new tier of seating was opened. A new floodlight system in 1981 was the last construction work on the stadium for a long time, as the club got into a financial crisis in the mid-1980s.
1992 until today
In 1992 a new board of the association was elected. The new President Martin de Jager required the construction of a new stadium for the club to survive. Some plans were examined and a. also a joint construction with Sparta Rotterdam. But all plans were rejected. In 1997 the decision was made to start construction and on July 17th of that year construction work began. Initially, the construction was financed with the help of compensation for lost television money, but over time this was no longer enough. The city was asked for help, but this did not materialize, although the city provided money for the renovation of De Kuip and the Sparta Stadium Het Kasteel in previous years.
On March 10, 1999, after lengthy negotiations, the city council Herman van den Muijsenberg announced that the city of Rotterdam would support Excelsior financially in the construction of the stadium. So the work could be completed and on July 31, 2000 the opening of the Stad Rotterdam Verzekeringen stadium was celebrated . After completion, the stadium had two new, modern stands, including the main stand, Henk Zon Tribune , named after an honorary chairman of the club. It is equipped with business seats, offices and changing rooms. Today the four covered tiers offer 4,400 seats for the spectators. It was given its current name Van Donge & De Roo Stadium on May 1st, 2017. The sponsorship agreement for the naming rights runs until 2027. Rotterdam's Botanical Garden Arboretum Trompenburg is located very close to the facility .
