The SolarUnie Stadium is a football stadium in the southern Dutch city of Helmond , in the province of North Brabant . It is the home of the Helmond Sport football club . The system has been named after SolarUnie , a Dutch provider of solar systems, since 2018 .

history

The stadium was inaugurated in 1967. Today it consists of three covered grandstands, with a back gate area open. The tiers are not at ground level, but are raised on concrete plinths. This improves u. a. the view of the field. The tiers offer 4,100 covered seats, 400 of which are reserved for guest fans. On the open side of the stadium there are houses and garages that residents use as free spaces. Each of the four masts of the floodlight system has 20 spotlights and the stadium is equipped with red plastic seats except for the VIP seats. There are twelve soccer fields of different sizes around the stadium.

The renovation of the venue began in the 1990s. In 1994 a new grandstand with a business lounge was completed in the east. Three years later, the second spectator tier was also built on the long side of the pitch. The old standing stand behind the gate was replaced in 2000 by a seating area. In 2007, the safety fences on the grandstands were removed.

New building plans

For a few years now, Helmond Sport has been planning to build a new stadium. In February 2019, preparations for the construction of the De Braak campus are well advanced. The project on the ground of the old stadium is to include a new venue for the club, an OMO Scholengroep school, a swimming pool with two 25-meter pools (one competition pool and one outdoor pool) and eight new training grounds. The association and the Dr.-Knippenbergcollege, which belongs to the OMO school group, set up an U-13 team for the 2018/19 school year. The children should be able to play football as much as possible and attend school. Construction of the school is scheduled to start in November 2019 and be completed in 2021. The OMO Scholengroep is financing its buildings with 30 million euros, which should have space for 1,800 students. 2,170 bicycle parking spaces as well as 540 fixed and 260 flexible parking spaces are planned on campus. The school buildings and the football stadium are phase 1 of the construction work. The municipality of Helmond is responsible for the stadium. It is scheduled to be completed by 2023. 16 designs for the stadium have been submitted so far. A decision should be made soon. The preliminary design must be finalized by the end of 2019, as the tendering process is scheduled to start in early January 2020. The football stadium with 4,500 seats should be ready for occupancy in 2023. The old venue will then be demolished. The municipality of Helmond will provide 25 million euros. The Helmond Sport association will invest a total of 25 million euros and a further 13.5 million euros for the swimming pool. The total cost of the project should be at least 55 million euros.

At the beginning of November 2019, those responsible announced that construction work would start in November. The entire facility is to be used car-free. Most of the roof will be covered with grass for natural insulation, store rain and protect the complex from overheating. The green roof of the east stand should be usable for inspection.
