Helmond Sport is a football club in the city of Helmond in the province of Noord-Brabant , Netherlands . The club plays in the Eerste Divisie , the second Dutch division. The club colors are red and black.
History and successes
The club was founded in 1967 when the professional football division of the Helmondia '55 club split off. At the beginning Helmond Sport played in the Tweede Divisie , the 3rd professional league at the time. But just a year later, the club rose to the Eerste Divisie . After many years in the second division, Helmond became champions of the second division in 1982 and rose to the Eredivisie . You could only stay there for two years and in 1984 came back to the Eerste Divisie as 16th.
The greatest success in the club's history followed a year later. 1985 reached Helmond Sport the KNVB Cup Finals, which thanks to a goal in injury time against FC Utrecht 0: was 1.
Helmond Sport has played continuously in the 2nd division since 1984, but occasionally took part in relegation to the Eredivisie. In 2005 they only narrowly missed promotion when the decisive game against Sparta Rotterdam was only lost in the closing stages. The 2006/2007 season ended Helmond on a disappointing 18th place. In the following two seasons, the North Brabant took 7th (2007/08) and 10th (2008/09) in the final table.
Trivia
The SolarUnie Stadium is distinctive because there are no grandstands on one short side of the field, instead garages border the stadium, which residents like to use as free standing and seating.
One of the strangest goals of the Dutch first division fell against Helmond Sport: On December 5, 1982 Helmond played against Ajax Amsterdam . Ajax were awarded a penalty . Johan Cruyff did not shoot directly on goal, however, but played the ball across to his teammate Jesper Olsen who had run into the penalty area. This ran a few meters and put the ball past the perplexed goalkeeper Otto Versfeld back across to Cruyff, who only had to hold out his foot.
