Stichting Betaald Voetbal Excelsior , SBV Excelsior for short and generally known in German-speaking countries as Excelsior Rotterdam , is a Dutch professional football club that comes from the Kralingen-Crooswijk district of Rotterdam . The home games are played at the Van Donge & De Roo Stadium , which can accommodate 4,400 spectators. With Excelsior, Sparta and Feyenoord , Rotterdam is the only city in the Netherlands that has three professional football clubs.
From 1997 to 2005 Excelsior Rotterdam was a farm team for the neighboring Rotterdam association Feyenoord. This means that Feyenoord had loaned young players to Excelsior for a certain period of time so that they could gain lower-level competition experience there.
The greatest success in the club's history was in 1930 reaching the finals for the Dutch Cup. The club lost the final 1-0 to Feyenoord Rotterdam .
The greatest success of the last few years was the promotion to the honor division in 2002. This year Excelsior Rotterdam also celebrated the 100th anniversary of the club. After one season, however, the club rose again and made it back to the Eredivisie in 2006 and 2010 . Due to the small budget and the very small stadium, Excelsior Rotterdam continues to play against relegation.
