Ryan Koolwijk (born August 8, 1985 in Rotterdam , South Holland ) is a Dutch football player .

Koolwijk learned to play football at vv Lekkerkerk before moving to the youth department at Excelsior in Rotterdam. Here he went through the further youth years and was finally included in the squad of the second team Jong Excelsior . It was only at the age of 22 that he made his debut in the Eredivisie as an amateur under coach Ton Lokhoff in the 2007/08 season on December 30, 2007 against Roda JC . In the second half of the season he made another six appearances in the top division. His achievements drew the attention of FC Twente , among others , but when Excelsior offered him a three-year contract, he signed it in May 2008.

The tech-savvy midfielder, who is particularly known for his spinning passes and "arched flanks", became a regular after Excelsior's relegation in the Eerste Divisie . He became the team captain of the Rotterdam team and made a significant contribution to the promotion in the 2009/10 season, not only with his six goals in 37 games. In the 2010/11 season he was able to maintain his leadership position in the team in the Eredivisie and was one of the guarantees that Excelsior could keep the class. For the 2011/12 season , Koolwijk followed his trainer Alex Pastoor to league rivals NEC in Nijmegen . When team captain Ramon Zomer moved to SC Heerenveen in mid-August 2011 , Koolwijk was chosen as his successor.
