Johannes Antonius Bernardus "Johnny" Metgod (born February 27, 1958 in Amsterdam ) is a former Dutch football player and coach .

Career

AZ Alkmaar (1976-1982)

Metgod started his career at Door Wilskracht Sterk, a small club from Amsterdam. In 1975 he came to his first professional club, HFC Haarlem . After only one year in Haarlem , he moved to AZ Alkmaar . He was one of the most successful team in club history and was able to celebrate the first national cup victory in club history with AZ in the 1978 final against Ajax Amsterdam . With the title Alkmaar took part in the European Cup Winners' Cup 1978/79 , but failed in the first round at the English Cup winner Ipswich Town . After the runner-up in the 1979/80 season Metgod reached the final against Ipswich Town with his teammates in the 1980/81 UEFA Cup . As in the Cup Winners' Cup two years earlier, the team of German coach Georg Keßler lost to the club from Ipswich coached by Bobby Robson . After a 3-0 defeat in the first leg, the 4-2 home win was not enough to win the title. Alkmaar acted more successfully in the Eredivisie 1980/81 by winning the first national championship in the club's history. This success was increased by winning the double in the cup final with a 3-1 win against Ajax Amsterdam. The team's first start in the 1981/82 European Cup ended after a first-round success over Start Kristiansand in the second round against English champions Liverpool (2: 2 and 2: 3). But Alkmaar defended his title in the final of the KNVB Cup 1981/82 against FC Utrecht .

Real Madrid (1982-1984)

After these successes, the 24-year-old Metgod moved abroad in 1982 and moved to Spain for Real Madrid . With the royal coached by legendary Alfredo Di Stéfano , Metgod reached the runner-up in the Primera División 1982/83 with one point behind champions Athletic Bilbao . In addition to the narrowly missed championship, the club lost two cup finals this season. In the final of the Spanish Cup , Real lost 2-1 to FC Barcelona and in the 1982/83 European Cup Winners' Cup there was a 2-1 defeat after extra time against FC Aberdeen, trained by Alex Ferguson . The decision in the 1983/84 season was even narrower than in the previous year , when the team around Uli Stielike , José Antonio Camacho , Santillana , Juanito and Johnny Metgod only missed the championship level on points with Bilbao because the goal difference was one goal worse. Internationally, Real failed in the first round of the 1983/84 UEFA Cup to Sparta Prague .

Nottingham Forest (1984-1987)

After two years without winning the title in Madrid, Metgod moved to England to Nottingham Forest in 1984 . The team coached by Brian Clough had reached third place in the First Division 1983/84 last year and therefore started in the 1984/85 UEFA Cup . There, the semi-finalists of the previous year failed in the first round with 0-0 and 0-1 at Club Bruges . In the championship, Forest was not as successful as before and only finished ninth in the table. After two eighth places in the First Division in 1985/86 and 1986/87 Metgod moved in 1987 within England to Tottenham Hotspur .

Tottenham Hotspur and Feyenoord Rotterdam (1987-1994)

The club from London had finished third in the previous year and reached an even more disappointing thirteenth place in the Football League First Division 1987/88 . Metgod was only used in twelve league games and turned his back on Tottenham after just a year. The midfielder then returned to his native Netherlands and signed a contract with Feyenoord Rotterdam , where he was able to collect titles again. Metgod won a Dutch championship with Feyenoord in the Eredivisie 1992/93 and was three times Dutch cup winner in 1991, 1992 and 1994, in addition, he was able to win the Dutch Supercup in 1991. In the 1991/92 European Cup Winners' Cup , he reached the semi-finals after winning the quarter-finals over his former club Tottenham Hotspur. After a 1-1 draw at the French Cup winners AS Monaco , Feyenoord missed the final against Werder Bremen with a 2-2 draw in the second leg . In the 1993/94 UEFA Champions League , which was introduced last year , the Dutch champions failed in the second round at FC Porto and missed the group stage. In 1994 Johnny Metgod ended his playing career at the age of 36.

Dutch national team (1978-1983)

Internationally, Metgod made 21 appearances for the Netherlands and scored four goals. He took part in the 1980 European Football Championship in Italy and retired from the group third with the Oranje Elftal in the preliminary round.

Coaching career

Metgod started working as a coach in the youth department of Feyenoord Rotterdam in 1994 . In 1995 he became an assistant coach at Excelsior Rotterdam . From 1996 to 1997 he was head coach at Excelsior and in 1997 interim coach at Feyenoord. In the same year he took over the position of assistant coach at Excelsior again at short notice and at the end of the year became assistant coach at Feyenoord. Metgod held this post until 2004. During his time he won the Dutch championship in 1999 and the Dutch Supercup in the same year, and Feyenoord also won the UEFA Cup in 2002 . In 2004 he took over the post of head coach at Excelsior again for a year, before he was again on the bench as assistant coach at Feyenoord from 2005 to 2007. He then worked with coach Tony Adams as co-trainer of the first team at Portsmouth FC until they were released together in February 2009. In May 2009, manager Nigel Clough brought him to Derby County in the same role .
