European Cup Winners' Cup 1977/78

The 1978/79 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the 19th draw of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 31 club teams from 30 countries took part, including defending champions RSC Anderlecht , 21 reigning cup winners and nine defeated cup finalists (FC Aberdeen, Schachtjor Donetsk, PAOK Saloniki, Kalmar FF, FK Bodø / Glimt, Ballymena United, US Luxemburg, FC Floriana and Fortuna Düsseldorf) . The representatives from Albania (no one was reported), Finland (qualified club has already been dissolved) and from Turkey (cup winner Trabzonspor banned from the European Cup) did not take part.

From Germany were DFB Cup finalist Fortuna Düsseldorf , from the GDR FDGB Cup winner 1. FC Magdeburg , from Austria ÖFB Cup winner SSW Innsbruck and from Switzerland Cup winner Servette Geneva at the start.

FC Barcelona and Fortuna Düsseldorf contested the final at St. Jakob-Park in Basel on May 16, 1979. FC Barcelona prevailed 4: 3 (2: 2, 2: 2) after extra time and won the for the first time UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

The top scorer was the Italian Alessandro Altobelli from Inter Milan with 7 goals.

mode

As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after both games, the number of goals scored away decided ( away goal rule ). If their number was also the same, extra time took place in the second leg, in which the away goals rule also applied. If there was still a tie at the end of extra time, a penalty shoot- out was carried out. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. In the event of a tie after extra time, the winner would also have been determined in a penalty shoot-out.
