Egon Köhnen (born November 24, 1947 in Erkelenz ) is a former German soccer player who played for Fortuna Düsseldorf from 1966 to 1981 in the West Regional Soccer League or Bundesliga . In 1979 and 1980 he won the German Cup with the Düsseldorf team . In total, he completed 376 championship games for Fortuna in 15 years and scored 17 goals.

career

As a youth player, Egon Köhnen was already active in the DFB's national student team . On May 24, 1963, he belonged to teammates like Norbert Nigbur , Horst Köppel and David Scheu of the German selection, which was able to prevail in Heilbronn with 3-1 goals against England. The selection appointments continued in the youth national team , which took part in the UEFA youth tournaments in 1965 and 1966 alongside other players such as Norbert Nigbur, Berti Vogts , Walter Bechtold , Karl-Heinz Kamp , Ludwig Bründl , Günter Keifler and Heiner Schmieh . For the 1966/67 season, the former youth player of Spvg Versmold was signed by Fortuna Düsseldorf, promoted to the Bundesliga. Hans-Georg Noack and Karl Heidelberger brought the negotiations with the Bestmann / Köhnen family in Versmold to success, the youth international switched to Fortuna.

Under coach Kuno Klötzer , the young player could not immediately prevail in the relegation battle in the Bundesliga. He had to be content with three Bundesliga appearances in his debut year as a licensed footballer in 1966/67. The trainer relied on routine. With a goal difference of 44:66, Düsseldorf rose immediately back to the Regionalliga West as the bottom of the table. The young footballer made his debut in the Bundesliga on January 21, 1967 in a surprising 2-1 away win at Bayern Munich against their attacking formation with Rudolf Nafziger , Rainer Ohlhauser , Gerd Müller , Dieter Koulmann and Dieter Brenninger . The Fortuna defense had formed in the World Cup system, which was still predominantly played at the time, with Dirk Krüssenberg (goalkeeper), Hans-Josef Hellingrath and Köhnen as defenders, as well as the runner row with Horst Häfner , Werner Biskup and Fred Hesse . Other players still often used in the Fortuna defense were the players Gert Wünsche , Werner Jestremski and Werner Lungwitz .

This was followed by four years of football in the second division of the Regionalliga West for Köhnen with Fortuna. The strong defensive player established himself as a regular player and, after the runner-up in 1970/71 and the success in the promotion round under coach Heinz Lucas , returned to the Bundesliga for the 1971/72 season. A total of 104 league games with five goals in the Regionalliga West from 1967 to 1971, plus eight promotion rounds with two goals, are in the statistics for Köhnen.

With two third places in 1973 and 1974 , he experienced the best performance with his club in the second and third year after his return to the Bundesliga and thus entered the UEFA Cup for the first time in 1973/74 and 1974/75 . In a total of nine games against Naestved IF, Admira / Wacker Vienna, Lokomotive Leipzig, AC Turin, ETO Győr and FC Amsterdam, he gained international experience in defensive midfield and defense. In the DFB-Pokal he moved into the finals three times in a row with Fortuna Düsseldorf from 1978 to 1980, of which he won two. The serious injury on October 14, 1972 in the away game against MSV Duisburg - bone splintering and torn ligament on the left ankle - prevented Kohnen in retrospect from a possible career in the national team.

The way in the competition of the European Cup Winners' Cup in the 1978/79 season was outstanding : After successes against FC Aberdeen, Servette Geneva and Banik Ostrau, Fortuna Düsseldorf made it into the final, in which FC Barcelona competed on May 16, 1979 in Basel won 4: 3 after extra time.

With the home game on June 13, 1981 - 34th round matchday - against Eintracht Frankfurt (2-2), Köhnen played for Fortuna Düsseldorf for the last time after 15 rounds with a total of 780 appearances. His former coach Dietrich Weise is assigned his task within the Fortunen-Elf with the striking words: “Your field only goes up to the middle line. There you try to take the ball and keep playing cleanly. ”When Fortuna stormed with the defensive players Zewe and Zimmermann, Egon was allowed to feel like the“ center line boss ”.

After a season at Bayer 05 Uerdingen - 1981/82 in the 2nd Bundesliga - Köhnen finally ended his professional career.

The trained banker was later involved in the insurance industry. He was voted into the team of eleven legends by Fortuna fans in 2009.
