Hans-Josef Hellingrath (born December 8, 1940 in Neuss), called "Jupp", is a former German football player . From 1966 to 1973 he played 229 games for Fortuna Düsseldorf and Hannover 96 in the Bundesliga , scoring four goals.

career

Oberliga and Regionalliga West, 1961 to 1966

After Hans-Josef Hellingrath with his hometown club VfR Neuss had reached promotion to the Niederrhein Association League in the 1960/61 season, he accepted the offer from Fortuna Düsseldorf to become a contract player in the Oberliga West for the 1961/62 round . Already on the first match day, August 6, 1961, in a 3: 3 against TSV Marl-Hüls, "Jupp" made his debut as a half right at Fortuna in the Oberliga West. The Fortunes finished ninth and the newcomer from Neuss had scored three goals in 15 games. Also in the last year of the league, 1962/63, he had almost the same playing times with 16 games. On the last league match day, May 11, 1963, he was left defender at the home game against Schalke 04 with the talent on the right wing, Reinhard Libuda . Since Düsseldorf had not been nominated for the 1963/64 round for the new Bundesliga, it was now for Hellingrath and his teammates in the Regionalliga West for the points. In the first two rounds, Düsseldorf took third place. In the third attempt, the team of coach Kuno Klötzer won the championship in the 1965/66 round ahead of Rot-Weiss Essen and Aachen and thus moved into the promotion round. Fortuna prevailed with the defenders Hellingrath and Wünsche against the equal points FK Pirmasens and rose to the Bundesliga. "Jupp" Hellingrath had played 89 games with five goals in the Regionalliga West in the three rounds.

Bundesliga, 1966 to 1973

Fortuna opened the Bundesliga round 1966/67 on August 20, 1966 with a 2-1 away win over Borussia Dortmund. On the 17th matchday the newcomer was in 15th place with 14:20 points. At the end of the round, Fortuna and Rot-Weiss Essen were relegated from the Bundesliga. Hellingrath had been in 30 games and scored one goal. The ninth in the table, Hannover 96, signed the defender for the 1967/68 round and the man from Neuss moved to Hannover.

Coach Horst Buhtz brought his newcomer to use on the first day of play, August 19, 1967, in a 3-0 home win against 1. FC Köln. Buhtz was replaced by Karl-Heinz Mülhausen on February 13, 1968 and the Lower Saxony only came in tenth place despite Jupp Heynckes , Walter Rodekamp , Hans Siemensmeyer and Josip Skoblar . Hellingrath played 33 games in defense. With Zlatko Čajkovski the leap into the top group should succeed. The result was eleventh place in 1969, and on December 8, 1969, Cajkovski was dismissed. Now Hellingrath experienced the Braunschweig master maker Helmuth Johannsen . In the first year 1970/71 he led the 96ers to ninth place. After a bad start to the 1971/72 round, Johannsen was also given notice on November 13, 1971. Successor Hans Hipp saved the league with 16th place. For four rounds in a row, “Jupp” Hellingrath hadn't missed a game in the Bundesliga despite the turbulence in the sport. From 1968/69 to 1971/72 he had played all 136 league games for Hanover. In the sixth year in Hanover, the coach was replaced again: Hannes Baldauf took over the office of Hipp on March 5, 1973 and again succeeded with the 16th place. On the last match day, June 9, 1973, Hannover won 4-0 goals at Wuppertaler SV and Braunschweig lost the home game against Fortuna Düsseldorf and was relegated from the Bundesliga. With this game, Hellingrath said goodbye to the Bundesliga and moved to TSV 1860 Munich in the Regionalliga Süd . For Hanover he had played 199 games with three goals in the upper house from 1967 to 1973.

In the three rounds 1967/68 to 1969/70 there were also nine missions with a hit in the Messe Cup . He gained his first European experiences against SSC Napoli with Jose Altafini and the last two matches he played against Ajax Amsterdam with their aces Johan Crujff, Barry Hulshoff, Ruud Krol and Gerrie Mühren.

End of career

In 1860 Munich, the veteran played the first eight games of the 1973/74 round in the Regionalliga Süd under coach Rudi Gutendorf . On the eighth match day, September 23, 1973, he suffered a protracted injury in the 2-1 home win against Hessen Kassel and then ended his career. On the second match day, August 15, 1973, at the home game against FC Augsburg with Helmut Haller , who returned from Italy , the Olympic Stadium was sold out with 73,000 spectators.

After the end of his career, Hellingrath moved back to his hometown Neuss and until 2014 ran the restaurant "Zum Libero" at the bus station.
