Hans Dieter Baroth was the son of a miner . He attended elementary school and then learned his father's trade. Until 1957 he worked underground in mining . After that, he held various activities and was from 1959 to 1961 union functionary . He began to write for various newspapers, was (under his real name Dieter Schmidt) editor-in-chief of the DGB youth magazine ran and - until it was closed in 1988 - of the DGB weekly newspaper Welt der Arbeit . From 1964 he began to make documentaries . Since 1963 he lived in Düsseldorf , from 1990 in Berlin. He was married to the historian Astrid Brand (born February 15, 1959).

In his narrative works, Hans Dieter Baroth was a sober chronicler of mining and, above all, of everyday miners' life in the Ruhr area in the second half of the 20th century. Baroth's later books dealt primarily with the history of football in his home region. In the last years of his life he wrote reports on the consequences of reunification in the eastern German states and at his last residence in Berlin.

Hans Dieter Baroth was a member of the Association of German Writers . In 1972 he received the German Journalism Prize from the IG Druck und Papier and the German Journalists Union and in 1992 the Ruhr Area Literature Prize .
