Nathaniel Pryor
Nathaniel Pryor (* 1772 in Virginia ; † 10. June 1831 ) was sergeant in the Lewis and Clark Expedition to the Pacific Ocean and later joined the Osage - Indians on.
He was born in Virginia in 1772 and moved to Kentucky with his parents in 1783 . There he married in 1798. Pryor was the cousin of Charles Floyd .
In October 1803 William Clark brought him with eight other recruits from Kentucky near Clarksville in the Indiana Territory on the expedition that went down in US history as the Corps of Discovery . Pryor was the expedition's only married soldier. He was made a sergeant .
On the way back from the Pacific, when the expedition was split up into several groups in the summer of 1806, Nathaniel Pryor had the task of bringing the horses needed to cross the Rocky Mountains overland to the Mandan Indians while the other expedition members went in boats across the Missouri River . All horses were stolen by Indians.
After the expedition ended, Nathaniel Pryor lived with the Osage Indians in what is now Oklahoma . He married an Indian woman and started a family. He traded and represented the tribe in negotiations with the US Army until he died in 1831.
The Pryor Creek in Oklahoma and the city of Pryor and the Pryor Mountains in Montana are named after him.
