Bundesliga 1971/72

FC Bayern Munich became the first in the 1972/73 season of the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .

Season overview

In the 1972/73 season, defending champion Bayern Munich was the table leader for the second time after 1968/69 from the first to the last match day and won the championship with an 11 point lead, which was already established after the 30th match day. Even Gerd Muller was able to defend his title as top scorer, this time with 36 hits. Last season's vice-champions FC Schalke 04 suffered from player bans due to the Bundesliga scandal . Borussia Mönchengladbach finished fifth - behind the Rhenish rivals 1. FC Köln , Fortuna Düsseldorf and the newly promoted Wuppertaler SV , who thus qualified for the UEFA Cup . The Gladbach team won the DFB Cup against 1. FC Köln in the game in which Günter Netzer " substituted himself" in extra time and scored the winning goal to make it 2-1. As both the cup winners and the cup finalists were among the top five in the table, the sixth, VfB Stuttgart , qualified for the UEFA Cup this time.

Because of the 1972 Summer Olympics , the 1972/73 season did not begin until September 16, 1972; the last match day was on June 9, 1973.

Others

In the 13th round (November 18) the match between Kaiserslautern and Bayern Munich (2: 1) was moved from Betzenberg to the Südweststadion in Ludwigshafen due to the expected crowd (54,000 visitors actually came) . Before the match, there were kidnapping threats against the Bayern stars Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller , so that the warming up of the guests took place under the protection of 18 police officers equipped with submachine guns.
